. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Applicationfled December 18, 1908. Serial No. 468,177.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing atGrand Rapids, in the county 4of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will e11- able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in garment hangers, and more particularlyto such devices adapted to supporta coat and trousers, and its object. is to provide the .same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully describedand par-V ticularly pointed out'in the claims, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is an elevation of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 an enlarged detail of the trousers holder shown in` 'elevation and partially broken away.' Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. Fig. 4 the same on the line of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a modification of the same= shown in side elevation with a part broken away. Fig. 6 a transverse section of the saine on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. Fig. T the same on the line 7--7 of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a moditicationof the ivot portion of the device shown in Fig. 2, 1n side elevation with a part broken away. Fig. 9 a transverse section on the line 9-9 of Fig. 8.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.`
l represents the coat hanger portion of the device having downwardly and outwardly extended arms and provided with a hook 2 at the top for suspending the same upon any convenient support.
3 represents a brace bar` extending between the respective ends of the arms and preferably consisting of a fiat metal bar having its respective endsbent to conform to the under surface of the arms and secured thereto by screws 4. Beneath this brace bar is a supporting bar 5 pivotally connected to the same at one end and having a limited downward movement at the-other end when the latter is released. This supporting bar 5 ispreferably semi-cylindrical and arranged with its convex surface upward to form a rounded surface of considerable width contacting the goods thereon. whereby no crease will be formed in a garf ment when supported thereby, being connected at the pivoted end by means of a T- head T extendlng through a slot in the supporting bar, which has a limited pivotal movement thereon. The arms of this T- head being spaced unequally from the brace bar and the arm nearest the end of the bar 5 being nearest the bar 3, when the bars are parallel this arm only supports the bar 5, the. other being such greater distance from the brace bar that the bar 5 may be lowered at one end to a suitably inclined position to receive the trousers or other garment. The
movable'end of this bar 5 is provided with a lateral recess S, in which is inserted a knobl 6 which knob, whenl in the recess, engages the concave under surface of the said bar and holds the same detachably secured parallel with the brace bar.
In'the modification shown in Figs. and 7, the pivoted end of the su porting har 5a is pivoted between the arms ot a yoke by a rivet 11 extending through the arms and through the said bar, the yoke being fixed to the brace bar, and the bars spaced apart a sufficient distance to permit the lowering of the other end of the bar 5a before its pivoted end will strike the 'brace bar. The movabhl end of the bar 5a is held in place by a hook t secured to the brace bar and extending along- Aside the bar 5"l and engaging one of the lower edges thereof as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
In Figs. 8 and 9 a modified pivot support is provided consisting of a fiat lug l2 secure-.f5 to the brace bar and extending through a slot in the supporting bar 5b, in which slot it has a limited oscillating movement sutiicient to permit the lowering of the bar 5, which bar is pivotally supported by a rivet 13 extendingV through the lower edges of the bar 5* and the lower end of the lug 12.
That I claim is l. A garment hanger comprising downwardly extended diverging arms, a brace bar connecting said arms and attached thereto, downwardly projecting members fixed in the brace bar near its respective ends, and a supporting bar having a limited ivotal connection .at one end to one mem er and detachably sup orted by the 4other memberl` at the other entli 'one end thereby1 and having a 1im1ted downward' movement at the other end, and means for detachably connecting said other end to the brace bar.
- 3. A garment hanger, comprising doWnvvardly extended and diverging arms, a brace bar connecting said arms and attached thereto, a supportingbar beneath the-'brace bar, a Thead connect-ing said bars, said headv being xedin one bar and having an oscillating movement in the other bar, and a knob fixed in one bar and detachably engaging a lateral recess -in the other bar.
4: A garment'hager, comprising down- Wardly extended and diverging arms, a at vbrace bar connecting the said arms and attached thereto, a semi-cylindrical support- Y ing bar beneath the brace bar and having a slotnear one'end and a lateral recess near the other end, a."T-heat1,xedin the brace bar and extending through t-he slot in the supporting bar and also having a limited, oscillating movement therein, and a knob fixed in the brace bai` and detachably engag ing the lateral recess in the supporting bar.
5.v A, garment hanger, comprising downwardly extended diverging arms, a iat brace bar connecting said arms and attached thereto, a semi-cylindrical supporting bar beneath the brace bar and having a longitudinal slot near one end and a lateral recess near the other end, a T-head xedin the brace bar and inserted in said slot and also having arms unequally spaced from said bar, and a knob fixed in th'e brace bar and detachably engaging the said lateral recess.
6. A garment hanger comprisin down'- wardly extended diverging arms, a at brace bar connecting said arms and attached thereto at its respective ends, and a supporting 'v bar beneath the brace bar concavo-convex in cross section and having its convex sidenext the :dat side of the brace bar, means for pivoting the barsto each other at one end, and
means for detachably connecting the bars to each other at the other end.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses. -VILLIM F. FREEMAN. Witnesses:
