'GARMENT HANGER.
(Appu'cmon med my' a1, 189s.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICR HERMAN FREDERICK BERNHARD, OF RICHMOND, lVIRGINIA.
GARM ENT-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,019, dated March 14, 1899.
Application filed May 31,1898. Serial No. 682,176. (No model.)
i BERNHARD, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Trousers and Skirt Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps or holders for suspending skirts or trousers, that they may be stretched by their own weight and thereby retain their proper shape, though the device is susceptible of use for other purposes not necessary to relate.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which will readily receive the article to be suspended and clamp the same firmly between the jaws without injuring the material clamped.
These and other objects and advantages will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim. l v
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of the invention, showing the jaws open. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View taken on the line a. of Fig. 2.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1
, designates the side arms of the clamp, which are formed from asingle length of spring-wire bent at its center into a coil 2, forming a spring tension foi-.the arms and receiving a suspending ring or hook 3. The arms l diverge for a suitable distance, providing a suitable hand-grip for opening the jaws, and are then bent toward each other, as at 4, crossing over and formed into terminals 5, extending approximately parallel. The exact shape' of the spring is not essential, as the invention claimed resides in what follows.
The horizontal jaws 6, which have fiat inner vertical faces, are preferably formed of smoothly-finished metal, one of which is narrower in width than the other, as shown, which greatly facilitates the placing of the article to be suspended between the jaws. Each jaw is provided with a series of holes or openings clamped therebetween into the openings, which aid in holding the article of clothing to 'the jaws without damaging the material thereof. The jaws are curved away from each other somewhat, as shown, whereby an eXtra clamping force is exerted by the jaws themselves. The jaws are secured to the terminals 5 in a novel manner by providing a pair of holes 8 in each jaw midway between the ends thereof, the terminals 5 being placed between the holes and on the outside of the j aws. A suit'- able molding material is formed over the ends of the terminals 5, entering the holes 8, which are iiared or countersunk, forming a head thereon, thereby securing the jaws to the vspringclamp in a simple and substantial manner.
The construction and arrangement as herein described produce an improved hanger embodying material advantages in point of simplicity and ineXpensiveness and at the same time afford means whereby the trousers may be more quickly and evenly placed between the jaws and held thereby without damage to the material, all of which combine to-form a highly useful and efficient device.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A device of the class described comprising two parallel jaws having smooth flat inner faces adapted to engage a garment, said jaws being each provided with a series of openings, the openings of one jaw registering with the corresponding openings in the other jaw .and thereby adapted to receive portions of' the material of the trousers, whereby the latter are prevented from slipping from between the smooth iiat faces of the jaws, one of the said jaws being narrower than the other to facilitate placing the garment between them, and a spring-clampconnecting the jaws and forming a hanger, substantially as and for the lpurpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN FREDERICK BERNHARD. Witnesses:
HARRY HUBER, RICHARD W. JoNns.
