GARMENT HANGER Filed Sept. 16, 1948 William F. Helm/i7 Patented Feb. 27, 1951 UNll'ED STATESPATENT OFFEQE GARMENT HANGER William Helwig, West Allis, Application September 16, 1948, Serial No. 49,470
2 Claims. i
This invention relates to garment hangers and more particularly trouser hangers.
One of the objects of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger adapted to tightly grip those portions of trouser legs inwardly of the creases thereof without undue pressure against the overlapped seams therebetween.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger adapted to tightly gri the ends of trouser legs and support a coat and vest thereon.
A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger having its jaws tightly locked against the ends of trousers by the supporting hook members thereof.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a trouser hanger having its jaws retained in trouser leg gripping position by a spring.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims and, although this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such departures therefrom as come within the scope of the claims,
In the accom anying drawings forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is an end view of one form of the trouser hanger with a coat and vest support shown thereon in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a bottom View of the same.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral. 5 designates, in general, a trouser hanger consisting of elongated handles ii having inwardly directed ears l and 3 formed thereon adjacent their lower ends and pivotally connected together by opposed lugs 59 stamped inwardly on ears l and projecting into holes is stamped in ears 8, it being understood rivets of any well known type in ay be substituted for said ears and holes.
Those portions of the handles below the pivots thereof have their inner opposed edges cut out as indicated by the letter C to provide a wide space therebetween to permit the abutting portions of the cuff ends of trousers to extend therethrough without pressing on the same.
Suitably secured to or formed on the lower ends of the handles are opposed reinforced jaws it having their medial portions l2 directed outwardly suf iciently to permit the overlapping seams of trouser legs to be gripped without undue pressure while those overlapped portions of the same inwardly of the creases therein are tightly gripped by the opposed end portions 93 of the jaws, thus roviding uniform pressure throughout the cuff" ends of the trousers. Said jaws have their edges bent or rolled outwardly as indicated by the letter D and their medial portions stamped or otherwise formed with longitudinally extending ribs E to strengthen the jaws andprovide areas along opposite sides thereof to support gripping pads P formed of felt or other suitable material.
Disposed between the handles and bearing outwardly thereagainst with its medial portion bent to underlie the pivot thereof is a resilient wire l4 having one end bent inwardly and upwardly with its outer portion bent to form a supporting hook I5.
With the aforesaid form of trouser hanger, the cuff portions of trousers are inserted between the jaws thereof subsequent to opening them by squeezing on the upper portion of the handles and, upon releasing them, the resilient wire will cause the jaws to tightly grip the cufi portions of the trousers without undue pressure on those portions thereof having the seams.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined coat and trouser hanger comprising substantially U-shaped handles in cross section reduced in thickness at their lower ends, inwardly directed ears formed on the sides of the handles, aligned lugs stamped inwardly on the ears of one handle pivotally seated in aligned openings in the ears of the other handle, a U-shape resilient wire looped around the axis of the pivotal point of th handles with. its arms bearing against the inner surface of the handles, a hook formed on the resilient wire and having its shank merging into one end of the resilient wire from a point approximately midway between the handl s, laterally extending jaws carried by the reduced ends of the handles in opposed relation and having their medial portions spread outwardly and edges rolled outwardly at their outer ends longitudinally extending ribs formed in the jaws, and gripping pads secured to the inner opposed surfaces of the jaws.
2. A combined coat and trouser hanger comprising, substantially U-shaped handles in cross section having inwardly directed upper ends, inwardly directed ears formed on the sides of the handles adjacent their lower ends, means pivotally connecting the ears together, a U-shaped 3 resilient wire having its ends resting against the inner surfaces of the handles above their pivotal points with their upper extremities terminating beneath the inturned upper ends of the handles, a hook having the lower portion of its shank bent at substantially right angles to its upper portion and forming a continuation of one of the ends of said resilient wire to dispose the hook approximately midway between the handles, substantially V-shaped jaws in plan view secured at their apex 10 Number to the lower ends of the handles and having opposed outer ends disposed in close parallelism,
and opposed gripping pads secured to the inner surfaces of the parallel ends of the jaws.
