GARMENT HANGER Filed Jan. 23, 1946 William F. Helwi Patented Oct. 5, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT HANGER William F. Helwig, West Allis, Wis.
Application January 23, 1946, Serial No. 642,913
1 Claim. 1
lower portion of the trousers under the influence of a spring.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the body portion of the trouser hanger.
A still further object of this invention resides in the particular construction of the spring and hook supporting the body portion of the trouser hanger.
Aside from the aforesaid objects one of the salient features of this invention resides in the particular construction of the trouser engaging arms.
Among the many objects of this invention is the particular manner of assembling the jaws and spring within the body portion of the trouser hanger.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in certain novel features of con struction and arrangements of elements to be hereinafter more particularly set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim to resort to such changes in construction and assemblage of elements as come within the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application;
Fig. l is a side View of the preferred form of this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. 1
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view through the pivoted portion of the hanger.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the spring and hook.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cup shaped spacer engaged by the coils of the spring.
In the present illustration of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a trouser hanger consisting of substantially U-shape members 6 and 'l disposed in opposed relation and connected together by a pivotal pin 8 beyond which are arms *9 formed on the body portion and carrying elongated jaws 10 having felt padding I! or other suitable material secured to their inner surfaces, said arms preferably being of arcuate configuration to provide a minimum area of contact against the trouser cuif or adjacent portion thereof.
Disposed between the pivoted portions of the body members 6 and i, is a cup shape spacer E2 around which coils E3 of a coil spring i i are disposed. Said coil spring has its free end i5 bear ing against the back wall of the member 5 and its opposite end l6 bearing against the back wall of the member l with its upper portion ll directed centrally of said member l and passing through an aperture 58 in said member l beyond which the portion it of said spring is bent to form a hook I2 by which the hanger is removably sup-= ported from a bar or other suitable support generally employed for such purpose.
In order to strengthen the jaws l6, ribs 26 are stamped outwardly therefrom, the same also acting to prevent shifting or buckling of the felt padding.
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that a trouser hanger of novel construction provided and through the instrunientality of th cooperative assemblage of elements, positive gripping of the trouser legs or cuffs is assured with the possibility of the jaws leaving unsightly depressions obviated.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A trouser hanger comprising, opposed substantially U-shape body members having inturned upper ends of diiferent lengths, a spacer between certain portions of the body members, a pivotal pin passing through aligned apertures in the body members and spacer and retaining the same together, substantially U-shape arms formed on the body members below the pivotal pin thereof, jaws secured to the lower ends of said arms in opposed relation to one another, padding secured to the inner opposed surfaces of the jaws, a coil spring having its convolutions loosely surrounding the periphery of the spacer with one end thereof extending through a hole in the longer inturned end of the adjacent body member and its opposed end bearing against the inner surface of the other body member, and a hook formed on" the outer end of that end of the coil spring extending through the aforesaid hole in the inturned end of the body member.
WILLIAM F. HELWIG.
