Description

w. H. BAUGH TROUSERS HANGER Sept. 5, 1939.
Driginal Filed Jan. 13, 1934 M7/4r0 H 32$? BY ATTOIENEY.
Patented Sept. 5, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TROUSERS HANGER Willard H. Baugh, Dearborn, Mich.
4 Claims.
This invention relates to clothes hangers, more particularly hangers for mens trousers and isa continuation of my application Serial No. 706,485, filed January 13, 1934.
5 An object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive structure for the purpose of such character of construction that the trousers may be suspended by the end of the legs.
A further feature and object of the invention is to provide a structure, devoid of manipulable clamping devices and the like commonly known in this art for supporting trousers by the leg ends, into which the leg ends may be introduced or from which they may be removed with greater ease and without necessity of manipulation of movable parts.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a structure of the character heretofore stated for supporting two pairs of trousers in parallel relation on opposite sides of a central supporting member by which they may be hung in inverted position, and 'a further feature and object of the invention is to provide a device that is adjustable in length whereby trouser legs of different widths may be conveniently supported by the hanger.
Also, a feature of the invention resides in the construction of the clamping means by which pressure is applied uniformly to the leg ends of the trousers throughout a considerable surface and thereby avoiding a clamping pressure at a small area which would tend to form an indentation and permit sagging between the parts of support.
It is also a feature and object of the invention to provide a trousers hanger of a form providing a spring clamping means operable to engage the cuff at the end of the trousers legs or to engage the trouser legs beneath the cuffs when the trousers are in an inverted position so that edges of the cuffs may also rest upon the upper face of the device.
These an other objects and novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and the preferred form of construction of a trousers hanger embodying my invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a perspective view showing my improved trousers hanger in its simpler form.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing an adjustable form of my improved trousers hanger adaptable for use with greater or less widths of trouser leg and showing my improved clamping means therefor.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing one of the adjustable elements shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2 indicating the position of the trousers thereon.
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 55 of Fig. 2.
In the simpler form of the device shown in Fig. l, I provide two metal strips l and 2 having the return bent ends 3 and 4 for the strip l and bent ends 5 and 6 for the strip 2. These return bent ends of the two strips use inwardly inclined relative to the respective strips and the terminal ends 1 of each of the return bent portions are outturned. These bent ends therefore provide What may be tremed a pair of pockets on the respective opposite sides of the device which are open toward each other and the terminal bent ends provide for pressure engagement of the goods with the respective strips. Centrally between the ends of the strips there is preferably provided a groove extending transversely thereof and the grooves of the two strips are in registration and receive the tang 8 of the hook element 9 by means of which the device may be supported in place. These strips I and 2 are formed of spring metal and the opposite edges of a trousers leg is introduced between the return bent portions 4 and l and 3 and l on one side of the body and the other leg may be introduced into the recesses formed between the return bent end 5 and I and 6 and l on the opposite side of the body. With the two strips as shown, two pairs of trousers may be suspended in inverted relation in the device formed as shown in Fig. 1. These two strips may be riveted or spot welded together to secure the tang in place and retain the strips in parallel relation. The trousers ends, shown by dotted lines ll] in Fig. 4, are provided with cuffs which may be inserted in or rest on the upper edge of the return bent portions 3 and 5 at one end of the device shown in Fig. 1 and 4 and 6 at the other end and the intermediate portion of the body. The trousers may also be supported not only by the spring pressure of the return bent ends on the cuffs but also by the cuffs resting upon the edges thereof.
It is not material to this invention how the tang may be attached to the body portions l and 2 as other means may be employed within the spirit and scope of this invention.
The form shown in Fig. 2 is of an adjustable type and is preferably constructed as follows:
I provide a body of sheet metal preferably folded upon itself as shown in section in Fig. 5
. tion to form a rectangular housing I l and this housing is centrally apertured to receive the tang l2 of the hook element I 3. This housing may be formed of any appropriate sheet material and not necessarily of spring metal. The garment clamping portions are indicated in Fig. 3 as having a body portion [4 that is insertible in the recess of the housing ll with the similar body portion I5 of a like element. These are slidable in thehousing and the portions l4 and I5 are of such length that when moved into the housing .Il
until the end of the housing engages the end 5 of the garment engaging element, the terminal end I! does. not quite engage the tang [2 of the hook element l3.
It will be seen in Fig. 2 that there are two garment engaging or clamping elements placed back to back with the bodies 14 and I5 in the housing element ll. These body portions I4 and I5 of the clamping device are a sufficiently tight fit in the central housing portion Has to normally remain in position except under considerable pressure.
A feature of the clamp elements is that the body I6, as shown in Fig. 3, has an inturned porl8 and the end l9 thereof is then return bent at an angle to or parallel with the portion l8 and the portion M; The point of connection between the portions l8 and IQ of the clamp is outturned as at 20 to form a wide entrance or throat into which the edges of the trousers legs are introduced and the portion l9 thus moved outwardly and to practically parallel relation with the body portion H5 or 5 of the device and this applied pressure practically equally throughout the length of the return bent end I9. Each end of the member H is provided with a pair of clamping devices as illustrated in Fig. 2 and the trousers ends may be introduced thereinto after the manner heretofore described in connection with the construction shown in Fig. 1. In either form of the invention, the cuifs or the leg portions below the cuffs, when in the inverted relation in the hanger, may be introduced into the clamping elements. The form of the trousers clamping means shown in Figs. 2 and 3 can be incorporated inv the hanger construction involving the two strips as shown in Fig. 1.
The trousers hanger is shown as being dual in character. However, a single strip having a tang portion or other means provided for supporting the same and having the clamping end portions may be utilized without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention.
While I have shown the spring clamping portions IQ of Figs. 2 and 3 as extending at an angle to the adjacent body portion I4 for instance, it is pointed out that the invention is not confined to such angular disposition of the ends I9 extending inwardly of the recesses as they might conveniently lie parallel or in contact with the respective body portion and other changes may be made in the specific structure shown without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
While I have described the device as a trousers hanger, it is pointed out that the device may be used for the hanging of various types of garments, toweling or other sheet like material by merely introducing the opposite edges or portions of the article to be suspended into the clamping elements. Thus the device is of utility in the hanging of various characters of articles.
From the foregoing description it is believed evident that the various objects of the invention are attained by the structures described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its
utility and mode of operation, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is-- p 1. A hanger for suspending trousers in invertedrposition by the leg ends, comprising two flat sheetmetal strips secured together in face to face relation and each having return bent ends in opposed relation to and spaced from the body of the respective strips providing oppositely disposed pockets on each side of .the device each opening toward the center, said strips at their centers being formed with opposed transverse grooves, and a hanger element having a tang secured in the opposed grooves by securing the strips together.
2. A hanger for suspending trousers in inverted position by the leg ends comprising two flat'sheet metal strips secured-together in face to face relation and each having its end portions in return bent relation therewith and inwardly inclined from the bend toward the respective'strip with the end in spaced relation, the terminal ends being outbent and the bent end portions of the two strips providing oppositely disposed pockets on each side of the device opening toward the center, and a hook member having a tang secured to the strips centrally between the bent ends;
3. In a hanger for suspending trousers in inverted position by the leg ends, a flat sheet metal strip having a return bent portion at one end in spacedrelation relative to the body and said return bent portion having a return bent part terminating in the space between the bent end portion and bodyand being inclined in respect to the body. r
4. In a hanger for suspending trousers in inverted position by the leg ends, a flat sheet metal strip having a return bent portion at one end inwardly inclined inrespect to, the body and in spaced relation therewith,.said returnbent portion being outwardly bent at a distance from the terminal end and the end portion again being return bent to position in the space between the body of the bent end and the body of the strip, the said end portion of the return bent end in said space being inwardly inclined toward the body. v
