SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,339, dated August 23, 1904:-

This invention :relates to trousers-hangers of'thekind in which two clamp members are applied to the lower ends of the legs of the trousers and held in engagement therewith by a spring and in which one of the clamp members is provided'with a hookor eye by means of whichthe clamp with the trousers attached may be suspended. Experience has .shown that when trousers are flattened out, creased, and attached to clamps of this kind and the clamp is suspended so as to cause the trousers to hang freely therefrom the shape of the trousers may be preserved for a long time without pressing.

The object of my'invention is to provide trousers-hangers of this general class Which shall be strong and durable, may be cheaply made, and quickly applied and released and which shall securely hold the trousers without in any Way injuring them.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of myimproved hanger applied to a pair of trousers. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the hanger with the clamp members open. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views showing how the rubber band employed is atcarries.

There are two clamp members A and B, which are preferably made of wood finished smooth, but unpainted or varnished. Each member is preferably formed, as shown on its inner side, with a wide groove (4 to accommodate the seams of the trousers in order that the members may firmly engage the goods on opposite sides of the seams. The memberA is' formed at oneend with a slot C, which is crossed by a wooden peg D, and at its opposite end is formed with a slot E. The front preferably recessed at e to receive the crossbar or handle K, hereinafter referred to. The member B is formed at one end with a recess Serial No; 198,331. (No model.)

J indicates an ordinary commercial rubber band or elastic loop, which is attached to the memberA by the peg D and extends through v the opening in the member B, formed by the recess G and closed by the peg H. In this way the members A and B are hinged together by the band J. Preferably the width of the recess Gr is-approximately the same as that of the band J or a little less, so that the band will fit tightly therein. The band J carries on its outer free end a cross-bar or handle K, which is preferably attached, in the. manner indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, by means of a'wireclip L. As indicated, the band is inserted through a loopl in the clip, and then the cross-bar K ispassed through'the eyes Z ofthe clip and through the looped portion 7" of the band. Then the band is drawn back tightly in the manner indicated in Fig. 4. When assembled, the parts will appear as shown in Fig.2, and when in this position the trousers may beapplied to the clamp member A. Then the clamp member B may be folded over upon the trousers, and the band maybe stretched and passed around the outer side of the member B, as indicated in Fig. 1, through the recesses I and E, and then the cross-bar or handle K may be seated in. the recess 0. Atthis time the parts will appear as shown in Fig. 1, and the clamp members will firmly engage thetrou'sers. One of-the clamp members may beprovided with a suitable hanger M, which is preferably a hook, as shown.

By employing a rubber band of good quality the hanger may be used for a long time without repair; but should the band be broken or wear out it can easily be replaced, as such bands may be easily procured. As there are so few parts and as these parts are all inexpensive the hanger may be made very cheaply. There are no loose parts to get lost. There is no complicated mechanism, and therefore the hanger can be easily applied to or removed from the trousers. As there are practically no metallic parts and as the clamp members are unvarnished or unpainted there is no liability of the trousers being stained or I in any Way injured. The clamp members are broad and flat, and no creases are formed in the trousers except Where they belong. By providing recesses to accommodate the seams the clamp is made to engage the trousers at the edges of the legs, and thus preserve the proper creases. As indicated in Fig. 2, the clamp members may be laid wide open to receive the trousers and then may be easily closed and secured. A uniform and constant pressure is exerted on the trousers while they are suspended, and therefore there is no danger of their slipping from engagement with the hanger. I preferably employ a rubber band, because this may be easily procured and it is easily applied. It is essential that an elastic connection should be provided, but this connection instead of being in the form of a band, as shown, might of course be in the form of a tape of single thickness; but I do not recommend this. It would be inferior to the band, and yet the use of such a tape would be Within the scope of my invention broadly stated.

I claim as my invention- 1. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members, a strip of elastic material flexibly connecting them at one end, and a cross-bar or handle carried by said elastic material and adapted to be detachably connected with the end of the clamp opposite the end thereof Where the clamp members are flexibly connected.

2. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members, a rubber band or elastic loop flexibly connecting them at one end and a crossbar or handle carried by said loop and adapted to be detachably connected with the end of the clamp opposite the end thereof where the clamp members are flexibly connected.

'3. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members, a rubber band flexibly connecting them at one end and which extends longitudinally along the outside of one of the members and across the ends of both members, and a cross-bar or handle carried by the band and adapted to engage the clamp.

4. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members each of which has recesses at opposite ends, a rubber band attached to one member at one end extending through an adjacent recess in the other member and longitudinally along the outside of said member across the other recessed ends of both members, and a cross-bar or handle carried by the end of the band engaging the clamp.

5. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members each of which is recessed at opposite ends, a rubber band extending through all of said recesses and longitudinally along the outside of one of the clamp members, a peg securing the band to one of the members, a cross-bar or handle carried by the band and engaging the same member to which the band is attached and a peg on the other member confining the band in one of the recesses through which it extends.

6. A trousers-hanger comprising two clamp members, a rubber band or elastic loop flexibly connecting them at one end, a cross-bar or handle carried by said loop and adapted to be detachably connected with the clamp, and a wire clip for attaching the cross-bar to the rubber band.
