GARTEB-GLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed February 6, 1907- erial No. 355,964-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BURR LAFOND HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California,
5 have invented a new and Improved Garter-Clasp, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved garter, which is simple and durable in construction, quickly applied, and arranged to firmly grip the sock or hose material with a view to securely hold the sock or hose in proper position.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view' of an application of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the gripping device; Fig. 3 is a face view of the blank for forming the gripping jaws; Fig. 4 is a face view of the blank for forming the slide for closing or opening the gripping jaws.
The garter band A of elastic or other suitable material has one end fastened to the usual buckle B mounted to slide on the band A, for lengthening and other end of the band A is provided with a hook 0 adapted to hook onto a loop D in the form of a cord, slidingly engaging the loop A formed on the end of the band A by the buckle B, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. l. The lower end of the loop D supports a gripping device E consisting essentially of a pair of gripping jaws F and a slide G mounted to slide on the shanks of the jaws F for opening and closing the same. The gripping jaws F are formed from a single piece of spring metal (see Fig. 3), doubled up and provided with lugs F adapted to be clenched inwardly and over onto the loop D, so as to securely attach the gripping device to the loop D, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The jaws F are provided with inwardly extending prongs F for'firmly engaging shortening the same, to fit the leg of the wearer. The
the sock material to firmly grip the hose or sock when the slide G is moved down, and the jaws F and F are closed with the sock material between the said jaws. The lower end of the jaws F and F are provided with outwardly extending flanges F to limit the downward sliding motion of the slide G. The slide G is made from a single piece of sheet metal, as indicated in Fig. 4, the piece being provided with a central aperture G for the passage of the shanks, it being understood that the piece of material is doubled up to form two members engaging the outer faces of the jaws F.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the gripping device is practically composed of but two pieces, which can be cheaply manufactured and readily attached to the supporting loop D, as above explained.
In using the device the band A is readily passed around the leg of the wearer and the hook O hooked onto the loop D, after which the hose material is passed between the open jaws F, and then the slide G is moved downward, so as to close the jaws, and thereby firmly grip the hose material between the jaws. When it is desired to release the hose, it is only necessary for the operator to slide the slide Gr upward, so that the jaws F open by their own resiliency, thus releasing the sock material. The garter can then be removed from the leg by unhooking the hook C from the loop D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A garter provided with a gripping device, comprising a single piece of material doubled to form a pair of jaws, and a slide made of a single piece of sheet material doubled and provided with an aperture for the passage of the said jaws.
2. A garter provided with a gripping device, comprising a single piece of material doubled to form a pair of jaws, one of the jaws having lugs, a cord for engaging the jaws at the connected portion, the cord being clamped in place by the said lugs, and a slide made of a single piece of sheet material doubled and provided with an aperture for the passage of the said jaws.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BURR LAFOND HARRIS.
