Description

FLT WEBER? TONGS.
APPLICATION FILED 'DEC. 23. i924.

'vwvmtoz FTTHEBERT FREDERICK T. THE-BERT, OF BESSEMER, MICHIGAN.
TONGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 10, 1915.
Application filed December 23, 1914. Serial No. 878,780.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK T. THE- nnn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Gogebic and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongs, of.
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tongs and more particularly to what will be hereinafter lmown as coal tongs, the main object of the present invention being the provision of a pair of tongs of the above character which is particularly adapted for use in handling briquet coal and for various other similar purposes.
Another object of the present invention isthe provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and, at the same time, is simple in construction and operation.
W'ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figur e l is a side elevation of a pair-of coal tongs con structed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view illustrating the applioation of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the tong members; and Fig.4 is adetail perspective View of the opposite tong member.
In the construction-of my improved tongs, I provide two pivoted members, each con sisting of a single piece of wire, one of said members having its intermediate portion provided with an elongated loop 1 which is preferably used for the reception of the fingers of a. hand. The ends of the wire are then twisted to form a shank 2. After the shank 2 has been formed, the ends are then extended in opposite directions to form alined pivot arms 3 and thence extended to form arcuate jaws 4.
The opposite section consists of a single length of wire substantially the same weight as the first section and is bent upon itself at its intermediate portion to form a loop 5, preferably a thumb loop. The ends of the wire are then twisted to form a shank 6, which is somewhat longer than the shank 2,
but the loop 5 is not as long as the loop 1.
The ends of'the wire of the second section are curved in opposite directions from the shank 6, as shown at 7, thence bent upon themselves to form the eyes 8, which are mounted for pivotal movement upon the arms 3 of the opposite section. The wire after being looped to form the eyes 8, is then arcuately curved to form the jaws 9 which are arranged in opposed relation with the members 4:- From this it will be apparent .that upon moving the handles 1 and, 5 toward or away from each other, the jaws 4 and 9 will be moved toward or away from each other, whereby to grasp an object-be tween the same or release it, when desired,
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, itwill be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable pair of tongs, which are preferably used for handling briquet coal and it will be noted that in using the tongs, the thumb is arranged within the loop 5, while the fingers of the hand are arranged within the loop 1. From this it will be seen that the opposed jaws 4: and 9 can be readily actuated toward or away from each other to grasp or release the coal or other object to which they may be" ;ap plied. It'will be noted that by having the eyes 8 pivotally mountedupon the arms 3, inward of the jaws 4:, it will securely-hold the two sections together and prevent them from, becoming accidentally disconnected. It will also be noted that my improved tongs can be manufactured. and placed upon the market at a comparatively low cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carryin my invention into practice, without sacri cing any of the novel features or departing from the scope' of the invention, as defined by the appended claims. Having thus described this invention, what I claim is 1. Tongs including pairs of jaws, each pair formed from a single length ofwire, the wire forming. one pairof jaws beingbent to provide a pair of spaced eyes, the remaining pair of iaws being offset at' their inner ends to provide pintles, said pinties' memes then extended to form av vs which coact with the first-named jaws, the pintles being disposed Within the eyes of-the first-named aws. i
In testimony whereof I hereunto etfix 'my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED. T. THEBERT.
