To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. Surrnnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Orange, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to hinged tools for lifting and carrying objects having a flat upper face (or lower face) and curved sides.
The main object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device which may be readlly operated and which will securely grip and hold the desired object.
In its preferred form the invention comprises two special hinged jaw members w th finger pieces and a spring for compressing the jaws toward each other.
Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional view and side elevation of the device showing 1n dotted lines the object being gripped. Fig. 2, is a view of the under side of the same parts. Figs. 3 and a are detail views of the two parts of the tongs.
The two parts are preferably formed of sheet metal and provided with flanges 10 and 11 respectively, hingedly connected by the pin 12. The two parts are preferably provided with finger pieces 13 and 14 for digital engagement.
One member is preferably provided with a jaw 15 extending at an angle to the body and terminating in hook-like jaws 16-16 spaced apart from each other. The other member is provided with two hook-like jaws 17-17 spaced apart from each other but located nearer to the axis of the pin 12 about which the two parts are hinged. A spring 18 is preferably provided for pressing together the two parts of the tongs so that the jaws are yieldingly ressed toward each other, the inner jaw 1 being adapted to close inside of the other jaw 16.
The parts are so constructed and arranged in the preferred form'of the device that the jaws 16 and 17 are adapted to engage the opposite curved walls of an object 19 and hold the upper (or lower) face of the object against the arm 15 so as to steady it. This enables the tongs to be conveniently used in picking up and carrying objects of the shape indicated, even though there be a restricted space above or below or at the sides for manipulation and insures an engagement which will enable an object to be lifted and carried without danger of its slipping out or dropping. Preferably the jaw 17 is arranged so as to engage the object in the plane between the upper jaws 1616 so as to insure a good grip upon the article 19 and without tilting it.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a relatively short inner jaw member and a relatively longer outer jaw member, said shorter inner jaw member terminating in an outwardly projecting relatively short hook portion adapted to engage the outer side surface of an outwardly curved object, said outer jaw member extending above and beyond the terminal hook portion of the inner jaw member to thereby engage over the top of an object engaged by the hook portion of the inner jaw member and terminating in an inwardly projecting hook portion disposed substantially opposite the outwardly extending hook portion on the inner jaw member to engage the opposite inwardly curved wall of a curved object gripped, and means pivotally connecting the two jaw members.
2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of pivotally connected spring pressed jaw members having handle portions extending rearwardly from the pivotal connection and cooperating outer and inner jaws extending forwardly from said pivotal connection, said inner jaw being.
relatively short and terminating in two spaced sharp pointed outwardly extending hooks and said outer jaw being relatively longer than the inner jaw and extending above and beyond the inner jawand terminating in downwardly and inwardly projecting sharp pointed spaced apart hooks.
3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of pivotally connected spring pressed jaw members having handle portions extending rearwardly from the pivotal connection and cooperating outer and inner jaws extending forwardly from said pivotal connection, said inner jaw being relatively short and terminating in an outwardly projecting sharp pointed hook portion, said outer jaw being angled upwardly with respect to its handle portion at a point forwardly of the pivotal connection and said upwardly angled jaw extending above and beyond the terminal hook portion of the inner jaw and terminating in a downwardly extending inwardly projecting relatively sharp pointed hook portion.
