Description
Nov. 12, 1935. J. w. CALLAHAN ,TONGS Filed July l, 1955 @2mn/agde@ N,
, ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented NOV. 12, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TONGS 4 Claims.
The invention relates to tongs and more especially to lifting tongs for handling, turning and holding wood, stone, iron, piping or other materials.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of tongs of this character, wherein the jaws are of a kind to enable a firm grip to be had upon a load and the gripping action is assured through leverage transmitted thereto when the work is to be lifted or conveyed from one locality to another.
Another object of the invention is the provision of tongs of this character, wherein hand lifting of objects or material can be had without-liability of the dropping of the load as a firm grip is assured when the material or load is raised from a resting position.
A further ob-ject of the invention is the pro- Vision of tongs of this character, which are simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eifective in operation, strong, durable, readily and easily handled and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of tongs constructed in accordance with the invention showing the same gripping a load.
Figure 2 is an elevation with the tongs open and free of a load.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View on the line 4-4 of Figure 1 looking in the direction 40 of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several Views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the tongs constituting the present 'invention comprise a pair of straight jaw members 5, these at the gripping sides thereof are provided with biting teeth 6 so that upon the closing in of the jaws 5 with respect to a piece of work the teeth 6 will firmly 50 bite and grip such work so as to avoid the dropping thereof when held between the jaws. The jaws 5 having integrally formed therewith shanks 1 which are disposed at substantially right angles thereto, these being arranged side by side 55 and reversed to each other. Embracing the Shanks 1 is a collar 8 through which said shanks slide in the opening and closing movements of the jaw members 5.
At the outer ends of the shanks 1 are upturned ears 9 having several spaced holes I0 5 therein for selectively accommodating pivot pins II which also are selectively engaged in spaced holes I2 provided in actuator levers I3, these being loosely connected by pivots I4 to the jaw members 5. 10
Integral with the levers I3 are angularly disposed handles I5 arranged in crossed relation to each other and terminate in loop-like hand grips or hand holds I6. The grips or holds I6 are slightly downwardly bent with relation to the l5 handles I5 so that when the jaw members 5 are in gripping relation to a piece of work I1 the grips or holds I6 will be in substantially a horizontal plane.
In the use of the tongs the work to be lifted 20 thereby is placed between the jaw members 5 and by leverage on the handles I5 when hand grip is had at the grips or holds I6 the jaws will be moved toward each other and in gripping engagement with the work I1 so as to rmly grasp the 25 same whereby onthe raising of the tongs the work will be elevated or lifted. In actuating the handles I5 the shanks 1 of the jaw members 5 slide through the collar 8, the latter being held fixed by a fastener I8 with respect to oneof the 30 shanks 1. Maximum leverage is had on the jaw members 5 by the arrangement of the handles I5 and the connection of the levers I3 with the Shanks 1. and the jaw members. It will be noted that each lever I3 is connected with one jaw 35 member 5 and also connected with the shank 1 of the other jaw member, there being a toggle action on the jaw members.
Associated with one of the handles is a guide 40 rod I9, the same being engaged at one end with the pivot II connecting this handle with the shank 1 and the other end attached at 2li to the said hanane, the ma la being in bridging relation to the other handle so that these handles 45 will be guided with relation to each other and tensioned in their crossed disposition one with the other.
What is claimed is:
l. In tongs of the character described, a pair of opposed jaw members having shanks at substantially right angles thereto slidably connected with each other and reversely disposed with respect to one another, and handle operated levers each pivoted to the shank of one jaw member and to the other jaw member for the movement toward andaway from each other.
V2. In tongsrof the character described, a pair of opposed jaw members having Shanks at substantially right angles thereto slidably connected `with each other vand reversely disposed with respect to one another, handle operated levers each pivoted to the shank of one jaw member and to Y the other jaw member for the movement toward and away from each other, and hand grips having handle connection with sa'd'levers. l
3. In tongs of the character* described, a Vpair of opposed jaw members having Shanks at slibstantially right angles thereto slidably connected with each other and reversely disposed with respect to one another, handle operated levers veach Vpivoted to the shank of oneV 'jaw"`mernb'er and to the other jaw member for movement to- Ward and away from each other, hand grips havl ing handle connection with said levers, and a pivoted `to the shank of one jaw member and to 10 `the other jaw member `for the movement toward l and away from each other, hand grips having handle connection with said levers, a collar embracing the shanksrand xed with relation to one on said jaw members.
