Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN J. AnAMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Radiator-Lifting Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to lifting implements or appliances; and it has for its general object to provide a simple and strong appliance, susceptible of ready application to a radiator of either the hot-water type or the steam type, and constructed and arranged whereby two men may conven iently lift a radiator or a radiator section either at the side or at the end thereof.
The invention contemplates providing the appliance with means whereby it is adapted to take secure hold of a radiator or radiator section without liability of slipping.
With the foregoing in mind the invention in all of its details will be fully understood from th following description and claims, when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective showing a radiator section with appliances constructed in accordance with my invention as applied to the side and the end thereof.
Fig. 2 is a perspective showing complete the construction of an appliance constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention of which I am cognizant.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same with the T head on the threaded shank in the position in which the same is placed precedent to the engagement of the appliance with a radiator or radiator section.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective showing the peculiar construction of the slide on the threaded shank.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
1 show in Fig. 1 a radiator section 1, and 1 would here have it understood that my novel appliances may be used to advantage for the lifting of a radiator section or a complete radiator, as occasion demands.
By comparison of Figs. 2, 3 and 4 of the drawings, it will be readily understood that my novel appliance is made up of a shank 2 having a portion 3 of circular form and cross-section, and also having a rear, en-
larged threaded portion 4, of rectangular form and cross-section, a T head 5 at the forward end of the shank portion 3, a slide 6 movable rectilinearly on the shank portion 4, an adjusting nut 7, and a clamping lever 8. In order to strengthen the connection between the T-head 5 and the shank 2, webs 5 are preferably provided at opposite sides of the shank and integral with the same and the head, as shown. The slide 6 is provided with a bore 9 of a shape in cross-section to snugly receive the shank portion 4, and said slide is also provided with a transverse aperture 10 for the reception and movement of the interiorly threaded nut 7 through the medium of which the slide is adjusted and adjustably fixed on the shank. As will be readily noted, the aperture 10 and the nut 7 are locatedadjacent to the inner end of the slide 6, this provision being resorted to in order to afford the long and strong outer portion 11, Fig. 4, to carry a standard 12, to which the clamping lever 8 is pivotally connected through the medium of a pintle 13. It will be noted that the standard 12 is provided with an inner comparatively narrow portion 14 and an outer thick or wide portion 15, which affords curvilinear shoulders 16, designed to rest against the bifurcated portion 17 of the clamping lever 8, at the outer side of said bifurcated portion, with a view to reinforcing the pivotal connection of the clamping lever and the slide. At this inner end the clamping lever 8 is provided with a T head clamp 18, the face of which is ribbed or toothed as indicated by 19. The outer arm of the clamping lever is preferably, though not necessarily, bifurcated to form a convenient hand grasp 19, and at an intermediate point of its length, and preferably adjacent to the center of movement of the clamping lever on said outer arm, is provided with a transversely disposed sleeve 20, open throughout and extending laterally at opposite sides of the arm. The said sleeve 20 is provided in order that a piece of gas pipe or the like, indicated by 21 and shown in Fig. 3, may be positioned in the clamping lever so as to enable two men to conveniently lift a radiator sec tion or a radiator through the medium of the single gripping appliance.
Either one or two of my appliances may be used in conjunction with a single radiator or radiator section in the discretion of the operators, and in applying each appliance the same is arranged so as to position the T head 5 vertically, whereupon the said T head is interposed between the sections at the side of the radiator or between the columns at the end of the radiator, after which the appliance is turned about its axis to position the T-head 5 at right angles to the sections or to the columns, as the case may be. The operator then grasps the outer arm of the clamping lever 8 and exerts forward pull thereon, with the result that the appliance will. be securely fixed to the radiator without liability of slipping or other casual movement. Manifestly, the appliance affords a means for enabling an operator to take secure hold of a radiator, and, as before indicated, a piece of gas pipe 21 or the like may be positioned in the sleeve 20 when it is ad vantageous or desirable for two men to lift through the medium of the single appliance.
The construction herein shown and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention that I. have as yet devised, but I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the specific elements or the specific arrangement thereof as here in illustrated and described, since in the future practice of the invention various changes inthe form and arrangement of the elements may be made without involving departure from the scope of my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A radiator lifter comprising a shank having a T head at its forward end and also having a comparatively large rear portion, rectangular in cross-section and threaded, a slide snugly receiving the said threaded portion of the shank and transversely apertured adjacent to its inner end and having a standard with a comparatively narrow and apertured inner portion and curvilinear shoulders between said narrow portion and its outer end, an interiorly threaded nut engaging the threaded portion of the shank and disposed in the apertured portion of the slide, a clamping leverhaving a bifurcated portion straddling the narrow portion of the standard and disposed and movable against the shoulders of the standard and having a T head on its inner arm and a handle on its outer arm and also having on the outer arm adjacent to its center of movement a transversely disposed sleeve extending at its opposite sides and open throughout, and a pintle ivotally connecting the clamping lever to tlie standard of the slide.
2. A lifting appliance, comprising a shank having a T head and a threaded portion, a slide movable rectilinearly on said threaded portion, a nut engaging the thread ed portion and carried in the slide, and a clamping lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the slide.
3. A lifting appliance comprising a shank having an enlargement at its inner end and also having a threaded outer portion, a slide movable endwise on said tnreaded portion, a nut engaging the threaded portion and carried by the slide, and a lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the slide and having on its outer arm a transversely disposed receiver for a rod section to extend at opposite sures of the arm.
4. A lifting device comprising a shank having a T head at its forward end and also having a rear threaded portion, a slide on said rear portion, a nut carried by the slide to engage the threaded portion, and a clamping lever fulcrumed at an intermediate point of its length on the slide and having a clamping head at its forward end and a bifurcated rear arm forming a handle and also having in said arm at an intermediate point in the length thereof a transversely disposed sleeve that extends at opposite sides of the arm and is opened throughout.
