CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar., 27 1917..
Application led April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,110.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, ELizABnTi-I KAKELA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of 1V'Vashington, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to clamps, and more particularly to a device employed in the laying of fiooring and the like, wherein a plurality of adjacent strips of material are adapted to be drawn together prior to their permanent securing in place; and has for its objects the provision of a simple, yet etlicient means for effecting the above referred to result in an extremely efficient manner.
Having these and other objects of genera design and utility in view, l have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my device in clamped position.
Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof.
Fig. 3 is a left handed end elevation thereof.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation similar to Fig. 1, showing a modiliedform of clamp.
Fig. 5 is a top plan thereof.
Similar reference characters refer respectively to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings A, B, and C, designate respectively three abutting sections of flooring. Engaging the sections of flooring and adapted to draw them together, is my improved clamp, comprising a rackbar 10, one end thereof being bent at right angles forming a jaw-lip 11. The opposite jaw 12 of my clamp is slidably mounted upon the bar 10 and is connected to a pawl 13 by means of a metal strap 14 journaled therethrough, its opposite ends passing over bearings 15 in said pawl; which awl comprises a lateral member 16 terminating at its end adjacent the pivot 15 in an inclined tooth 17; its opposite end terminatesin an upwardly extending integral handle member 18.
IIGSSGS.
In the modified form of clamp the ends of the metal strap 14 are crossed, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, thus providing a suitable amount of play in the resilient strap for the purpose hereinafter to be more clearly set forth. l l
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that in order to draw the sections of flooring together, the jaws of the vise are drawn together contacting opposite' edges thereof, the pawl 13 is thrown forward as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the tooth 17 thereof engaging the rack-bar at a point substantially in front of the pivot 15. The pawl `is then thrown forward the tooth 17 serving as a pivotal contact with the rack-bar 10, until the lateral face 16 of the pawl contacts the rack-bar as shown, thus drawing the jaw 12 toward the jaw 11 which will materially force the sections A, B, and C together. lt will be obvious that a certain amount of spring or play must be present in the connecting link 14, and to provide for this play, I have given the form to the link 14 as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
What l claim is:
A clamp comprising a rack one end of which terminates in a jaw, a coacting jaw slidably mounted on said rack, a cam terminating at one end in a handle, a tooth terminating the opposite end of said cam, a yielding member connected at one end to said slidable jaw, the other end whereof pivotally engages said cam mediate the tooth and handle, whereby when the handle is moved to bring the cam against the face of the rack the cam is held in such position and the slidable jaw is held in engagement with and pressed against the work.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own l have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of 'two subscribing wit- ELIZABETH KAKELA.
