UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN H. COBB, OF FITCI-IBURG, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO MARY ELIZABETH JOHNSON, TRUSTEE, 0F FITGI-IBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
PISTOL-GRIP.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, LYMAN H. COBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at F itchburg, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistol-Grips, of which the following is a specification accompanied' by drawings, forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a pistol, provided with a pistol grip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of my improved pistol grip.
Similar reference figures refer to similar parts in the different views.
The object of my present invention is to provide a pistol with a larger gripping surface for the hand, by means of a detachable extension which can be readily applied to and removed from the pistol butt, so that it can be quickly applied whenever required, and removed when it is desired to use the pistol butt in its ordinary form.
The detachable grip which forms the subject of my present invention is intended as an article of manufacture which can be carried in stock by dealers in fire arms and applied to a pistol as desired. In addition to being detachable from the pistol butt, my improved pistol grip possesses some advantages over the pistol grips now in use due to its shape and method of attachment.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 1 denotes the butt of a pistol, and 2 my improved detachable pistol grip consisting of two members hinged together at 3 and inclosing the end of the pistol butt. One of the members comprises a curved arm 4 adapted to fit the outer convex surface of the butt and extending upwardly upon the butt beyond the point inclosed by the palm of the hand. The arm 4 is provided at its upper end with a rearwardly curved horn 5 projecting over the upper edge of the hand, and holding the butt from being forced downward when held in the hand. The second member of my improved grip consists in a jaw 6 extending upwardly a short distance from the end of the butt and fitting the inner side or edge of the butt. Both of the hinged members of the grip project downwardly below the pivotal point 3 forming the extensions 7 and 8. The extension 7 is provided with a set screw 9 having its end bearing against the extension 8, so that when Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 15, 1907.
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
Serial No. 362,471.
the screw 9 is screwed into the extension 7 it will force the extensions 7 and 8 apart, rocking the two members of the pistol grip on their pivotal pins and forcing the arm 4 and jaw 6 firmly against the outer and inner edges of the pistol butt.
As the arm 4 is extended upwardly to cover a considerable portion of the convex edge of the butt, it is only necessary to employ a short jaw 6 to clamp the arm 4 securely against the pistol butt and prevent its longitudinal movement thereon. By employing the short jaw 6 I leave the upper inner portion of the pistol butt entirely free, as at 10, with suflicient space between the upper end 11 of the jaw and the rear end of the trigger guard 13 to receive the two upper fingers of the hand. The jaw 6 is provided with a concave surface 14, and the extension 8 has a concave surface 15 adapted to receive the remaining fingers of the hand. The arm 4 presents a long convex surface 16 to fit the hollow in the palm of the hand and provided with a bearing surface for the hand entirely across the palm.
The two members of my improved pistol grip are hinged together by means of a plate 17, either integral with the arms 4 or,
as in the present instance, attached thereto by means of a pin or rivet 18. The jaw 6 is pivotally connected with the plate 17 by a pivot 3 and the upper edge 19 of the plate 17 is adapted to contact against the end of the pistol butt and limit the movement of the pistol grip upon the butt. A very slight movement of the set screw 9 is suflicient to securely clamp the pistol grip to, or release it from, the pistol butt.
I claim,
1. As an article of manufacture, a detachable grip for pistols, comprising two members hinged together and adapted to inclose the edges of a pistol butt.
2. As an article of manufacture, a detachable grip for pistols comprising two members hinged together and adapted to inclose the edges of a pistol butt, and having extensions on the opposite side of their pivotal connection, and a set screw carried by one of said extensions and bearing against the other of said extensions to force said members toward each other.
3. The combination in a pistol grip, of a curved arm adapted to fit the rear edge of a pistol butt, a short jaw adapted to press against the forward edge of the butt, and a plate pivotally connected to said arm and said jaw, and means for rocking said arm and jaw on their pivotal connections to con1- press them against the pistol butt.
4. As an article of manufacture, a detachable .grip for pistols, comprising two members hinged together, said members arranged to contact with the front and rear edges of a pistol butt respectively, and means for rocking said hinged members.
5' In a pistol grip, the combination of a :l Witnesses:
curved arm adapted to fit the rear edge of a pistol butt, a jaw adapted to cont-act with the forward edge of the butt, said arm and 15 said jaw being pivotally united, and means for rocking said arm and said jaw on their pivot.
Dated this twelfth day of March 1907.
