To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HOWARD T. INGHRAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and' State of Illinois, have-invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holding Imple- Jicnents, of which the following is a specificaion.
This invention relates to improvements in devices adapted to hold brushes of various kinds, mopping fabrics, scrubbing, wiping and dusting cloths and similar articles, and has for on'e of its objects to provide a device of this character in which the various articles to beheld may be easily attached and detached and firmly held in position while in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character adapted to be adjusted to hold the articles at any required angle relative to a supporting handle.
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in certain novel featuresof construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the improved device;

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The different members of the improved device are mostly compressed from sheet or and comprise coacting head portions pivotally united, coacting gripping jaws connected to the head portions, a holding member adjustably coupled to the head portions and adapted to be connected to an operating handle, means for compressing the holding jaws against the object being held, and means for adjustin the holding meinber and the handle relative to the head'por.-

At one end the members 14 are substantially circular in shape and pivotally united at 16 between the side portions 10. The flanges V21 are of less length than the sides of the body 17. adjacent thereto'so are bent at right angles to the body 17 a space will be left at the apex of the body 17 to receive the web portions 11--15 o f the head members. -By this means the inner ends ofthe ianges 21 bear against the sides 10--14 of the head members, while vthe opposite ends of the flanges 21 are directed in parallel relation to the flange 19 and spaced therefrom. rThe body portions 17 are riveted or otherwise rigidly secured respectively to the webs 11-15. When thus arranged the flanges 19 are directed toward each other with their free edges in spaced relation, the object to be hereafter explained.
A holding member forms a part Iof the improved device and comprises a disk 22 circular in shape corresponding to and substantially the same size as the circular portions of the members 10, The member 22 both. Each gripthat when the anges A iio is adapted to be rigidly coupled to the handle portion 23, and for the purpose of illustration the handle engaging portion of the member 23 is in the form of athreaded stud 24 engaging in the handle. Preferably the handle is provided with a supporting ferrule 25. A threaded pivot 26 extends through the enlarged portions l of the head member and through the holding member 22 and is provided with a wing nut 27 so that the members through which the pivot passes may be firmly clamped together to hold them in adjusted position. The enlarged portions and the holding member 22 are provided with coacting depressions and projections indicated at 28, to enable the members united by the pivot 26 to be firmly locked together and prevented from displacement. By this arrangement the head members together with the gripping jaws may be disposed at any required angle relative to the handle, and firmly held in adjusted position.
Extending through the web portions 11- 15 of the head members is a threaded bolt 29 supplied with a wing nut 30, so that the head members together with the gripping jaw members may be firmly compressed toward each other to hold any art-icle which may be disposed between the jaws. Preferably a spring indicated at 31 is disposed between the web portionsv 11-15 of the head member and operates to hold the head members and the gripping jaws normally in open postition, and when the wing nut 30 is actu ated the jaws will vbe forced toward each other against the resistance of the spring. The spring thus operates to automatically open the jaws when the wing nut 30 is released.
The improved implement thus constructed may be employed for gripping brushes, mop fabrics, dust-ing cloths, or other articles, and will firmly hold the article rigidly in position, and by adjusting the head members relatively to the holding member, the article may be held in any required angle relative to the handle. When employed for holding a brush, the head portion 32 of the brush will be provided with a holding member 33 having a T shaped head as shown in Fig. l, over which the flanges 19 of the head members engage as shown. lVhen t-hus arranged the fianges 19 engage the inner faces of the T head, while the outer face of the head is engaged by the forward terminals of the flanges 2l.
The improved device is simple in construction, can Ybe inexpensively manufactured and all of the parts except the member 22 pressed from sheet metal, preferably steel.
The improved device .is strong and durable, and may be manufactured of any lrequired size to adapt it without materialstructural change to hold articles of various sizes and forms.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
