Application filed September 30, 1909. Serial No. 520,246.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TWOHIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hull, in the county of Pike and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in jar holders and has for its object to provide a simple and eiiicient device of this character whereby hot fruit jars may be handled without danger of burning the hands.
WVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of this improved jar holder; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof partly in section; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail end elevation showing the ratchet catch.
In the embodiment illustrated a handle 1 is shown preferably composed of a steel wire loop and having a fixed curved jaw 2 extending laterally from the free end of the side member 1 thereof and adapted to cooperate with a movable jaw 5 for grasping and holding a jar between them. The free end of the jaw 2 is bent to form an L-shaped latch member, the long arm 3 extending at right angles to the body of said jaw and in the same horizontal plane. This arm 3 is provided on its upper face with a plurality of ratchet teeth as A for a purpose to be described. The jaw 5 is hinged at its inner end to the free end of the side member 1 of the handle 1 and is provided at its free end with a longitudinally extending finger piece 4* for operating it. This finger piece 43* is preferably beveled on opposite sides to form a sharp edge for engaging the teeth 4 on the arm 3. A bottom member 6 composed of any suitable material preferably metal is preferably provided with a rubber lining 7 on its upper face designed to receive the bot-- tom of the jar to be supported. This bottom member 6 is connected with the jaw 2 by connecting rods as 8 which may be either flat or round and are secured at one end to the bottom 6 by any suitable means and at their upper ends with the aw 2 by riveting or otherwise. Another rod 9 connects the bottom 6 with a brace 10 extending transversely between the side members of the loop-shaped handle near their inner ends. A sleeve 11 is slidably mounted on the side member l of the handle 1 and is adapted to abut at its inner end against the outer face of thej aw 5 to hold said jaw in closed position, said sleeve being slit longitudinally at 12 to pass freely over the end of brace 10. A plate spring 13 is secured at one end to the outer face of the side member 1 near its free end. The outer end of this spring 13 projects beyond the outer end of the sleeve 11 and is preferably provided with an operating button or thumb piece 14 adapted to be depressed for disengaging the spring 13 from engagement with the inner face of sleeve 11 when it is desired to move said sliding sleeve outward to provide for the opening of the jaw 5.
In the operation of this improved holder the button 14: is depressed to disengage the member 13 from the sleeve 11 and said sleeve is moved outwardly to release its inner end from contact with the jaw 5, and this 5 may then be opened and the jar, bottle or can to be held is placed upon the base or bottom 6. The sliding sleeve 11 is then moved inward until its inner end abuts against the aw 5 and forces it into tightly closed position around the jar and the spring member 13 bears against the inner face of said sleeve and firmly locks the jaw in closed position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device for holding jars and other vessels comprising a handle member having a curved jaw fiXed to one end thereof, a movable jaw pivotally connected with said handle, a sleeve slidably mounted on said handle and adapted to engage said movable jaw to hold it in closed position, a. spring member mounted on said handle and adapted to engage said sleeve for holding said sleeve in contact with said movable j aw.
2. A device for holding jars and other vessels comprising a loop-shaped handle member having a curved jaw fixed to the free end of one member thereof, a movable jaw pivotally connected with the other member of said handle, a sleeve slidably mounted on said last mentioned handle member adapted to engage said movable jaw to hold it in closed position, a spring member operable to engage the inner face of said sleeve, and secured to said handle, and means for releasing said spring member from said sleeve.
