Description

S. POOLE. Pork for Pickles, 8E0.
No.198,313. Patented Dec. 18,1877.
N. PEIERS, PHDTO-LITHDGRAFHER, WASNKNGTON 0 C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL POOLE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN FORKS FOR PICKLES, 800.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 198,313, dated December 18, 1877; application filed November 22, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL POOLE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Forks for Pickles, Canned Fruits, 800., of which the following is a specification:
Difficulty arises in removing pickles from a jar, one by one, as required, or in taking canned fruit out of the jars or vessels, because the article is liable to slip off the fork, and in many instances the article moves when the fork is pressed upon it, and the fork does not enter.
My present improvement relates to and consists in the novel combination, with the fork, of a swinging claw, and the rod, handle, and spring, for operating the same, whereby the pickle or other article can be grasped and withdrawn from the bottle or can with great facility, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the fork; and Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, as open, and in larger size.
The prongs a a are at the end of the rod b, and there is a swinging claw, d, pivotedto the rod b, at c, said claw d having a hooked end that is either pointed or chisel-shaped. The prongs a are also pointed like a fork.
There is a button-head, g, or handle at the end of the rod, and a sliding button or handle, h, around said rod, with a spring, k, between them. The rod 1 extends from this handle h to the swinging claw. If this rod lis jointed to the claw d between the pivot c and the point, as shown by the full lines, then the expansive spring k will act to close the fork, and the claw will be swung back by pressing the heads or handles 9 h toward each other. If the rod 1 is pivoted to the claw at the opposite side of the fulcrum from the point, as
shown by dotted lines, then the spring will act to open the fork, and the claw will be moved toward the prongs a by pressure upon the button heads or handles 9 and h.
This fork is Very convenient for use, and is easily kept clean. It may be made of various sizes, according to the use to which it is to be placed, and it supplies a want that has long been experienced in this line.
This implement is especially useful in grasping oysters and removing them from the pickle or other liquid in which they may be kept. It may also be used with canned meats and other articles of food.
The swinging claw may be made with one or more prongs.
I claim as my invention- The fork for pickles and other articles of food, made of the prongs a at the end of the rod b, and the swinging claw d, operated by the rod 1, the heads g and h, and spring 7:, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 20th day of November, A. D. 1877.
SAMUEL POOLE.
