(No Model.)
J. HALLER. DEVIGE FOR HOLDING FRUIT CANS. No. 409,148. Patented Aug. 13, 1889,
WWII/E8858: IIVI/E/VTOI? i ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HALLER, OF PORT CLINTON, OHIO, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO WVILLIAM BERTSOH, OF SAME PLACE.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING FRUIT-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,148, dated August 13, 1889. Application filed March 18, 1889. Serial No. 303,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HALLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Port Clinton, in the county of Ottawa and State of Ohio, have iiwented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Fruit- Oans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
This invention has relation to devices for holding cans in preserving fruit and other canning operations; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of de vices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.
The object of the device is mainly to enable an operator to grasp and hold a can with one hand while fastening the cover in such a manner that the hand will not be burned.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the clamping handle-sections, and B the clamp-strap. The handle-sections A A are of similar form, expanded at their inner portions, which terminate in concave ends or bearings a a. To one of these bearings a the end of the strap B is fastened by one or two screws, and said strap extends in front of said concave bearings in loop form, as at 0, its free portion pressing between the handle-sections and beyond these outer ends, when it is adjustably fastened to a hook d,
secured to one of the handle-sections. By taking the strap up or letting it out its loop can be diminished or increased to suit the size of the cans which are being covered.
Parallel connection-plates E are secured to one of the handle-sections at its outer end, and between these plates the other handlesection is pivoted,as indicated at g. The end of the pivoted section is curved in cam form to provide a stop which will allow the section to be opened outward. from its fellow somewhat, to increase the height of the loop in applying the clamp-strap to a can. Vhen placed over the can, the strap is tightened upon the same by drawing the handle-sections together.
The cam-stop 7t prevents the movable handle-section from moving too far from its fellow to be readily reached by the fingers of the hand with which the holder is being operated.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination, with the handle-section having a concave end and a clamp-strap fastened thereto, of a movable handle-section pivoted to its fellow at the inward end from the portions grasped by the hand, and having a stop to prevent it from opening out from said fellow too far for grasping with the fingers of the hand holding and operating the instrument, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HALLER.
