JOHN BAHRET, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 489,782, dated January 10, 1893.
Application filed September 8,1892. Serial No. 445,333. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN BAHRET, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps and consists in certain novel features which are set forth in the following specification and claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1, is a perspective View of the clamp. Fig. 2, is a side view thereof. Fig. 3, is a front View thereof.
In carrying out my invention I provide a block, A,in whose lower part, are formed legs 13, 13, between which is suspended eccentrically the roller cam O on the pivot D which passes horizontally through the legs and through the cam near its edge.
The cam C is operated or turned on its pivot by means of the handle rod, E, whose upper end is provided with an eye, F, which is adapted to be suspended on a hook, whileitslower forked end Gis pivoted eccentrically at H to the cam, O, the position of pivot H on the cam being with reference to the pivot, D, on the opposite side of the cam from pivot D. The handle rod, E, is guided on the block, A, by a guide loop, S, through which it passes. When the handle rod, E, is lifted, the cam O is turned upon the pivot, D, so as to bringits corrugated surface I against the breast J of the block A, as is shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, where the device is shown both in its normal position, before it is operated, and also in its position when suspended, the cam being shown as grasping some article between it and the breast J of the device.
It is obvious from an inspection of the drawings that when the device is suspended from its handle rod the cam G will be turned automatically from its position in full lines in Fig. 2 to that shown in dotted lines in the same figure, and that any article K. placed between the cam and the breast, J, of the device as shown by dotted lines will be clamped thereby and securely held without danger of tearing, the pressure being according to the weight of the article, K.
The cam, C,is made wide or narrow as preferred, according to the weight of the article to be suspended.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a clamp, of a suitable block A having a breast J, a cam O pivoted to a part of the block opposite said breast for clamping an object between the latter and the cam, and a lengthwise movable rod E eccentrically connected with the cam for turning the latter, substantially as described.
2. The cornbinationin aclamp, of asuitable block A having a breast J, legs B, and a guide S, a cam O pivoted between the legs at a point opposite the breast for clamping an object between the latter and the cam, and a lengthwise movable rod E eccentrically connected with the cam for turning the latter and eX- tending through the said guide on the block, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in" the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN BAIllRET.
