JOHN A. WEAVER, OF GREELEY, COLORADO.
WHIP HOLDER AND STRETCH-TER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,555, dated llareh 22, 1904.
Application filed October l0, 1903.
T0 @ZZ whom it puny concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. W EAvER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greeley, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip Holders and Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a device for holding and stretching a whip, the object being to keep the whip straight at all times. It is well known that when awhip is new it is perfectly straight, or approximately so, but after it has been used for some time there is a tendency for its upper extremity to bend downwardly. The object of my improved device, as above indicated, is to prevent this tendency by providing a device in which the whip maybe kept stretched, so that it is perfectly straight when not in use. Hence by the use of my improvement it is believed that a whip can be kept perfectly straight until worn out.
The invention consists of a yieldingly-supported device with which one extremity of the whip is connected and a clamping device adapted to grasp a part of the whip remote from the said extremity. The tension of the yielding device may be regulatedl at pleasure. When in use, as shown in the accompanying drawings, the cracker extremity of the whip is caught by the yielding or spring-actuated device and the whip is pulled downwardly until it is perfectly straight, after which a part Serial No. 176.559. (No model.)
the latter being partly broken away for lack' of room on the sheet, it being desired to show the two members of the device on a suitable scale in this view. Fig. 2 is a side View of the upper member of the construction shown in Fig. 1 or a View looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a perspective view in detail of the holding .device for the cracker end of the whip. Fig. 4 is a perspective view in detail of the plate upon which thel device shown in Fig. 3 is mounted. Fig. 5 is a perspective view in detail of the clamping device.
It will be observed from an inspection ofthe drawings that my improved device consists of two members-namely, the member with which the cracker end of the whip is connected and the clamping device which engages the body part or handle of the whip remote from its small 0r cracker end. Let A designate the holding member, and B the clamping member, each member being considered in its entirety. The member A is provided with a plate A', having apertures in its extremities, through which are passed screws or other suitable fastening devices A2, whereby the plate is iixedly secured to a suitable stationary support O. Punched out of this plate A' near each extremity is a lug A3, extending at right angles to the body of the plate. Each of these lugs is provided with an opening in which is inserted a pin Vor small rod Ai, the extremities of the'pin being preferably held in place by riveting. Upon this rod A'l is mounted a device having a claw extremity A5, a part A'j extending inwardly from the claw to the plate A', a part A7 extending downwardly from the part AG and in engagement with the plate A', and a part As extending outwardly from the lower extremity of the part AT and at right IOO angles to the last-named part. The two parts A6 and A8 are parallel with each other, and each is provided with an opening A, through which the rod Ai passes, whereby the holding device is slidably mounted on the rod. Between the part A8 of the holding device and the lug A3 of the plate is located a coil-spring A10, which surrounds the pin At, its upper extremity bearing against the part A8 and its lower extremity against the lugA3. The ten- ,sion of this spring is such that it will normally hold the claw-shaped device at its upward limit of movement. The part A7 of the claw is fiat and of suicient area to prevent any tendency of the claw to turn upon the rod A4 when the parts are assembled, since the part A7 is in contact with the outer face of the plate A., This obviates any tendency of the claw to twist about while in use. The clamp, as shown in the drawings, consists of a plate B .and a piece of spring metal having jaws B2 and a circular part B3. The plate B is provided with openings B4, in which screws or other suitable fastening devices can be inserted. The two members A and B are located at a suitable distance from each other, according to the length of the whip with which they are to be used.
From the foregoing description the use and operation of my improved device will be readily understood. The cracker end of the whip D is provided with a knot D', which is caught in the claw A5 of the holding device. The user then pulls down on the whip until the spring A10 is compressed to give it the necessary or desired tension, after which the handle D2 of the whip is slipped into the clamp, the latter being of suiiicient tension or strength to prevent the handle from slipping when the latter is once in place. It is evident that when the whip is thus placed in position in the members of my improved device it will be held perfectly straight, and it is believed that if the whip when not in use is kept in this device it will be kept perfectly straight at all times and substantially in the same condition, so far as this feature is concerned, as when new.
Having thus described my invention, what Y l. A whip holder and stretcher comprising two members, one of which is provided with a yieldingly-retained device adapted'to engage one part of the whip, and a clamping device adapted to engage the other part 'of the whip, the two parts being arranged to hold the whip securely in place, the yieldingly-retained part being bodily movable in a line connecting the two parts.
each other, and one of the parts being bodily 4 movable in a line connecting the two parts.
3. In a whip-holder, the combination of two separated devices adapted to engage two different parts of the whip, one of the said devices being yieldingly retained, vertically movable bodily and having a pair of rigid Jaws.
4. The combination of two devices located in suitable proximity to each other for holding a whip, one of the said devices being spring-retained, and bodily movable in a line connecting the two devices.
5. The combination of two members, one member consisting of a plate, a pin mounted thereon, a claw slidably mounted on the pin, and a spring surrounding the pin and acting on the claw; the other member consisting of a device adapted to receive and hold a part of the whip remote from the claw, the latter being adapted to receive the cracker end of the whip.
6. The combination of two members, one member consisting of a plate, a pin mounted thereon, a claw slidablymounted on the pin and having a iiat part engaging the plate to prevent the clawv from turning, and a spring surrounding the pin and acting on the claw; the other member consisting of a clamping device adapted to hold the part of the whip remote from the claw.
7. The combination of two members, one member consisting of a plate provided with a pin, a holding device slidably mounted on the pin and comprising a claw, two parallel parts provided with openings through which the pin passes, and a part extending at right angles to the parallel parts and engaging the face of the plate to prevent the claw from turning, and a spring surrounding the pin and bearing upon one of the parallel parts of the claw; the other member consisting of a device provided with clamping-jaws adapted to receive and hold the part of the whip remote from its small end.
8. A whip-holder comprising a yieldinglyretained claw and a clamping device, the two parts being suitably separated, the claw being bodily movable in a line connecting the two devices. a
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. WEAVER.
