TROUSERS-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
y Patented Apr. 2, 1912.
Application filed July 6, 1911. Serial No. 637,072-
To all' whom et may concern.:
Ile it known that I, GUs'rAr It. BowMaN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident ot' Rockford, inthe county of V/innebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Hangers, of which the 'following is a specilicatioi'i.
My invention relates to improvenients iu hangers for trousers and has tor its object to provide a device 'which is simple, cheap and efficient to permit trousers to be quickly and conveniently hung up to stretch, and which will permit of the ready release ot the same.
W ith these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination ot parts as will be hereinafter tully described and pointed out iu thc claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, .in which Figure l is a perspective view ot my improvement as in use. Fig. 2 is a side ele ration of the same showing` position ot parts releasing the trousers. Fig. f-l is a perspective view oi the locking means for holding the parts c-it the device in position to receive the trousers.
In carrying out my invention. I use two tlat bars A and A of metal or other suitable material, the bar A being pivoted to the bar A at its end, the bar A extending beyond the end of bar A and carrying a suspension hook B which is adapted to hang over a peg, bar or hook in a wardrobe or on a wall. At a suitable distance below the pivot a which connects the bars A and A a coiled spring C is connected to the said bars by the hooked ends 0 of the spring, each bar having spaces c cut out to allow the coils of the spring to snugly fit therein. At the lower ends of the bars I provide flat clamping bars A2 constructed alike, each bar having its central portion bent upon itselt to form a clamp C which is riveted or otherwise securely fastened to the said bars A and A; these transverse bars have vertical faces which may be roughened and are adapted to grip the trousers or garment which is to be suspended. The said vertical faces of the clamp bars are projected inwardly from the upright arms carrying them, so that they stand away some distance from said arms. The normal action of the spring is to draw the clamping bars toward each other, they forming opposing jaws. To open these jaws and hold them open, I provide the device illustrated in Fig. 3, said device, which is a trigger latch or lock, consisting of the metal strap iron I) which is pivoted at (l to the arm A and at d to the handled iron Il at c', said iron being pivoted to the arm A at c, the iron E extending beyond the arm A and 'fashioned into a handle E. Thestrap iron D has intermediate its ends a lug (l2 proj ecting transversely therefrom, said lug being -formed by cutting a portion of I) and turning` it upwardly to a horizontal position as plainly indicated in Fig. 3; this lug (Z2 which constitutes a stop is to be engaged by the cut out or reduced portion of the handled iron IC and prevents it from being thrown down too far. The handle E has a notch c3 which will engage and fit over the clamp jaw secured to the lower end ot bar A', holding the bar E in an oblique position as shown in Fig. l.
1When it is desired to hang trousers in the device, the trouser legs are pressed together and the lower ends pushed upwardly past the clamp jaws when they are in the position shown in Fig. 2 until they strike the latch device comprising the irons E and E', whereupon the latch is broken at its pivotal center and the coil spring then draws the two jaws toward each other firmly gripping the trousers and holding them suspended until it is desired to release them, and assuming the position shown in Fig. 1. To release the trousers from the hanger, the handle E is grasped and pushed upwardly whereupon the pivoted ends of E and E will be brought downwardly until the cut out or reduced end c2 strikes the stop lug (Z2, the tension of the spring holding them in the position shown in Fig. 2. The hanger is now set for the next operation of hanging the trousers.
It will thus be seen that I provide a simple and convenient device for suspending trousers that is positive in its action and which can be operated at a very slight eX- penditure of labor.
If desired the hook may with the bar A.
I claim l. A trousers hanger comprising a pair ot arms pivoted to each other at their upper ends, clamping jaws projecting inwardly toward each other from the lower ends of said arms, said arms having notches in the inner be made integral i edges intermediate their upper and lower ends, a coil spring connected to said arms and seated in the aforesaid notches, said spring normally forcing the jaws toward each other, and a two-part latch pivotally connected at its ends to vthe said arms below the coil spring, an operating handle projecting outwardly from said latch whereby the latch is adapted to force the jaws apart to permit the entrance of a garment between the said jaws, said latch adapted to be broken by the upward movement of the garment between said arms and permit the spring to force the clamping jaws into gripping contact with the garment.
2. A trousers hanger comprising a pair of arms pivoted to each other at their upper ends, clamping jaws at the lower ends of said arms, a spring connected to said arms and normally forcing the jaws toward each other, and a two-part latch pivotally connected at its ends to the said arms, said latch adapted to hold the clamping jaws apart to permit the entrance of the garment between said jaws, said latch adapted to be broken by the upward movement of the garment between said jaws, and permit the spring to force the clamping jaws into gripping contact with t-he garment.
3. A trousers hanger comprising a pair of arms pivoted to each other at or near their upper ends, transverse clamping jaws at the lower ends of said arms, a spring connected to said arms and normally forcing them and the clamping jaws toward each other, a latch for holding said jaws separated and consisting of two members pivotally connected to the arms and to each other, the end of one member of the latch having one end reduced or cut out and its other forming a handle, the other latch member having a lug positioned to engage the reduced or cut out end of the first mentioned latch member, said latch adapted to hold the clamping jaws apart in opposition to the aforesaid spring, and to be released or broken by the upward movement of a garment between said jaws, and means for suspending the hanger arms.
4. A trousers hanger comprising a pair of opposing jaws normally held in contact with each other, and means for separating said jaws, said means also positioned to be engaged by the entrance of the garment between the separated jaws and release them whereby said jaws may spring together to support the garment.
