ous materials or articles. -The object of the invention is to provide a clip which is simple of construction, eflicient in use, inexpensive of production, and adapted to firmly grip and hold the article or material until manually released without injury to the same in any way and without requiring the punching of holes in the material or article for its application.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a clip embodying my Invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the.
same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 5 is atransverse section.
The invention comprises in its construction two main members 1 and 2, each formed of a single piece of wire, and a tubular sleeve or The wire of which the member 1 is formed is bent to provide a substantially rectangular frame consisting of the side bars 4:, front cross-piece 5, and a rear cross-piece formed by inturned portions 6, terminatingin eyes 7, located side by side and in alinement, as shown. At a point a short distance from the cross-piece 5 the side bars 4 are bent or coiled to provide bearing-eyes 8. by the formation of which the side bars 4 are projected backward beyond the coil. The cross-piece 5 serves as a fixed or stationary jaw of relatively restricted width and may be toothed or serrated on its under side, as shown at 9, to firmly grip or engage the material or article to be held or fastened. In forming the member 1, as thus described, a singlepiece of wire of the desired gage and length is taken and bent centrally to form the front crosspiece 5, thence extended rearwardly and coiled to form the arms 4 and bearing-eyes 8, and finally bent inwardly at the rear to form the inturned portions 6 and bent or coiled to form the eyes 7 lying in alinement with each other to serve as a guide for an operating-cord, as hereinafter described.
The member 2 consists of a single piece of wire bent centrally to form a cross-piece 10, forming a jaw to coact with the front crossbar or jaw 5 of the part 1, thence extended rearwardly to form converging side arms 11, which are bent to provide coils l2, and finally bent at their free ends to form eyes 13.
The coils 12 of the member 2 receive and clasp the member 3, which consists of a tubular spindle which is journaled at its ends in the bearing-eyes 8 of the member 1 and supports the member 2 intermediate of the arms 4 of said member 1, thus allowing the member 2 to be swung to move the jaw 10 into and out of coacting relation with the jaw 5. The spindle 3 is preferably made of some resilient or spring metal and is split throughout its length, as shown at 141, to adapt it to be held under tension by the coils 12 to fit it securely thereto, and at its ends said spindle is slightly flared, as shown at 15, to engage the coils 8, which hold it from endwise movement therein and casual disconnection from the member 1. By this construction the parts 1 and 2 will be pivotally connected and securely retained in proper relative engagement.
A cord or other flexible operating device 15 is looped through the eyes 13 of the member 2 and provided with a knot 16 to retain it in engagement therewith and thence passes through the eyes 7 of the member 1. The function of this cord is to enable the part 2 to be conveniently operated and held in engaging position from a distant point or suspended to hold an article securely clamped between the jaws 5 and 10.
In connecting the clip with the piece of leather or fabric to be stretchedon any material or article to be fastened or suspended the clip is brought into position to admit an edge of the material or article between the jaws 5 and 10, and then the cord 15 is drawn upon to move the jaw 10 toward the jaw 5 and clamp said article or material firmly against the same. The cord 15 may then be secured to any suitable support to hold the member 2 in fastening position, and when this has been done it will be observed that until the tension on said cord is released the article or material held between the jaws 5 and 10 cannot possibly pull out or become detached and that said jaws will hold the same firmly without injury or without the necessity of punching holes in the material or otherwise mutilating the same to adapt the jaws to be brought into engagement therewith.
The device will be found exceedingly useful in leather-factories for stretching hides, and it may also be used for stretching fabrics of various kinds and for holding and suspending various materials or articles, and as it is simple in construction it may be cheaply manufactured and sold at comparatively low cost. It is also durable and when used in leatherfactories for stretching leather obviates the necessity of making holes in the same, as is required when the old-fashioned toggle or fastener is used, takes up less room, and allows the finisher to work to the edge of the leather without loss of time, as the fastener is of such form as to offer no obstruction to free manipulation during the finishing treatment.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the inventionwill be readily understood without require ing a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clip comprising two members pivoted together, one of said members provided with a jaw or cross-bar and terminal eyes adapted to form a guide for an operating-cord, and the other member having a jaw or cross-bar, converging arms, and a terminal eye on each of said converging arms for the operating-cord, and said operating-cord secured to the latter eyes and passing through the former eyes, sub stantially as described.
2. A clip of the character described comprising a member composed of a single piece of wire bent to form a cross-bar or ja'w, side arms provided with bearing-eyes and end portions having terminal guide-eyes, a spindle journaled in said bearingeyes, a movable member consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form a jaw, coils engaging said spindle and termina eyes, and a cord connected to said terminal eyes and extending through the guide-eyes in the first-named member, substantially as described.
3. A clip of the character described, comprising a frame member bent to form an end piece or jaw, side arms having bearing-eyes, and end pieces formed with terminal guideeyes, a split resilient sleeve or spindle journaled in said bearing-eyes, a movable member consisting of a single piece of wire bent to form a jaw, side arms formed with coils engaging said sleeve or spindle and terminal eyes, and a cord connected to said eyes and extending through the said guide-eyes in the frame member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit:
nesses.
BRUCE M. STANNARD.
