ALEXANDRE RAMBICUR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LINE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390.518, dated October 2, 1.888.
Application filed April 2, 1888. Serial No. 269.386. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDRE RAMBIOUR, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Line-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The holder which I have devised is designed, principally, to hold clotheslines and the like; but it can be used, generally, for holding any pliable or flexible objects-as, for example, suspenders, &c. It can best be explained and understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a view representing the position of the parts of the holder when the latter is in use.
The holder consists, essentially, of the block A and the sliding clamp B, which is mounted and adapted to slide longitudinally in guides in or on the block. In the form in which it is represented in the drawings the block is rectangular aud hollow, its hollow interior being formed to fit and receive the sliding clamp B. In the block is formed the eye or aperturecin one face and the slot b in the other face. This slot, however, is provided only to accommodate the tripping-lever O. In the absence of the tripper 0 there need be no slot, but simply an eye similar to the eye a. The block has an eye, a, by which it may be connected to a nail, stud, or other support.
The clamp-plate B is formed with a slot, d, and an eye, 6. The eye is in the front end of the clamp, which projects beyond the block A. The slot is located in the clamp in a position in which it will come opposite to the eye a and slot b of the block A.
Pivoted at e to the block, on the slotted face of the latter and to one side ofthe slot 1), is the tripper lever O. This lever is a bent lever, the longer arm of which forms a handle,f, while its other and shorter arm is provided with a pin, g, which passes down through slot 1) and enters a hole formed for its reception in the clamp-plate B.
The manner in which the device operates will be understood by reference to Fig. 3. In this figure the holderis represented as attached to a wall or the like by a nail or stud, m, which passes through the eye a. The line 7 is supposed at the other end to be attached to some fixture. At the end next to the holder it passes through the front eye, 6, of the sliding clamp, and thence over the front'end of the block down through the slot b and eyea of the block, and also through the slot (1 in the clamp, which intervenes between b and a. By pulling on the end y the line can be drawn taut, the parts of the holder readily yielding to this movement. As soon, however, as the hold of the hand on this end is relaxed or released, the line will tend to contract, and in so doing will pull outwardly the clamp B; but this outward movement of the clamp causes that part of the line which passes through the holder to be tightly clamped by being caught between the rear end of the slot d in the clamp and the front of the eye a and slotbin the holder. In this Way the line will be securely held so long as it is under tension. It can be released at any time by simply operating the tripper O to move the clamp-plate backward far enough to release the line.
Having described myinvention and the manner in which it is or may be carried into effect, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the block A, apertured for the passage therethrough of the line, as described, of the clamp-plate 13, mounted and adapted to slide in guides in or on said block and provided with the slot dand the end eye, 6, these parts being arranged together for joint operation in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination of the block A, formed with eye a and slot 12, the clamp B, mounted and adapted to slide in said block and formed with slot d and eye 6, and the tripper-lever 0, pivoted to the block and connected to and adapted to operate said clamp, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of March, A. D. 1888.
ALEXANDRE RAMBIGUR.
