T 0 all whom it may concern: Beit known that I, EDWIN W. WILSON, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Openers, of which thefollowing is a full, clear, conciseQand exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to jar openers and has for its object theprovision of a household article of this class which is simple in construction, reliable in its operations and one which can be economically manufactured.
In general the device of my invention comprises a pair of pivoted arms, to one of said arms being rigidly attached a flexible cable adapted when in operating position to form a loop, one end of the loop being adjustably secured between said arms. The arms and cable are so arranged that the cable may be adjusted to form any size loop in order to facilitate the removal of jar covers having different dimensions. These and other advantages of my invention will be more fully set forth in the following description in which reference is made to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the ]ar opener of my invention shown in position upon a jar cover, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken through the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevational View, some of the parts being broken away to more clearly reveal the construction. In this figure a jar cover is shown of somewhat smaller dimensions than that shown in Fig. 1.
The device of my invention comprises two lever arms illustrated at 4 and 5 forming a pair of pincers. As shown in Fig. 2 the arm 4 is stamped and folded along the left hand edge in Fig. 1 and pressed together at 7 so as to provide a hollow portion 6 which is arranged to receive one end of the flexible cable 8. The cable 8 before inserted into the hollow portion 6 is dipped into solder so as to provide a bulky portion illustrated at 9. The pin 10 is then inserted into the arm 4 to secure the cable.
As shown the arm 5 is arranged to partly inclose the arm 4, said arms being pivoted in fitheir locked position, is arranged to clamp the cable 8 against the right-hand wall of the arm 5, Fig. 1. The cable extends downwardly through the interior of the handle 5 and terminates in a finger piece or ring 12. Suitable prongs or retainers 14 arecarried by the handle 5 to maintain the flexible cable in the position indicated in Fig. 1. The arms 4 and 5 may be recessed at 15 and 16 to serve as a nut-cracker, one of the edges of the recess, or both, if desired, being serrated. An extension 17 may be provided on the arm 6 to act as a stop or retainer for the nut-cracker.
At 18 and 19 I have illustrated apertures for use. in wire cutting, the portions of the arms 4 and 5 in proximity to these aper tures being case-hardened. If desired other devices may be attached to the arms, such as a corkscrew illustrated at 20, a bottle opener at 21, and a tack puller at 22.
The operation of the device is as follows: In removing the cover 23, Fig. 1, from a jar, the handles 4 and 5 are moved outwardly so as to release the Cable 8. This cable is then placed partly around the cover and the handle 12 pulled downwardly until the flexible member 8 is taut around the cover. The arms 4 and 5 are then moved to the position indicated in Fig. 1 allowing the clamping face 13 of the arm 4 to engage the cable. The entire device is then moved in the direction toward which the cover is to be moved in removing the same from the jar. This last-mentioned movement of the entire device causes one end of the loop formed by the flexible member 8 to be moved away from the center of the cover, and one of the serrated edges 25 or 26 of the arms 4 and 5 to engage the edge of the cover, whereby the cover may be easily unscrewed from the jar.
Fig. 3 shows a jar cover at 24 of comparatively small dimensions and shows the cable 8 in its operating position around said cover so that the same may be easily removed by turning the arms 4 and 5 in the required provided with a clamping face, and an adjustable flexible member arranged to form a loop when in operating position, having one end secured to one of the arms and its other end extending between the said clamping faces, so as to be securely held when the arms are moved to operating position, each of said arms being provided with a jar engaging face positioned between the ends ofpivoted together to form a pair of pincers, a clamping portion carried by one of the arms and positioned between the pivot and the handle, the other of said arms having a portion of substantially U shaped cross section arranged to contain the clamping portion of the first mentioned arm, and a flexible member having one end thereof secured to" the pincers, and its other end adapted to be inserted into the U shaped arm to be grasp-ed by the pincers to form a loop, said arms being provided with a jar engaging face, positioned between the ends of the loop.
