No. 824,968. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 13, 1906. Serial No. 311,564.
tudinally within the bottom of the tray is a concavity 11, adapted to receive rounded obresiding at jectssuch as cans, jars, &c.and to keep them centered upon the tray. Alip 12 extends from the free end of the tray. Extending from the end of the handle and overhanging the tray is a bowed arm 13 preferably formed of heavy twisted wires and terminating in a fork 14, having depending fingers 15, disposed beyond the end of the tray. A hook 16 is also arranged upon the end of the handle and extends in a direction opposite to that of the arm 13.
In using t e device herein described the tray is adjusted to a desired distance from the arm 13 by pulling outward on the grip 5, so as to remove ger 6 from engagement with the handle. The sleeve 3 can then be moved to a desired position, and when the grip is released finger 6 will be reseated in any one of the recesses 7. The tray is now lifted until the lip 12 comes into contact with a shelf close to the base of the object to be removed, and the device is tilted so as to bring To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful'Lifter for Store Goods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for manipulating packa es, cans, &c., and it is particularly adapted for use in stores for the purpose of removing articles from high shelves where they are beyond the reach of the hands.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character havin an adjustable tray for receiving objects of ifferent sizes and which is also suitable for supporting rounded objects, such as cans and jars.
The invention consists of an elongated tray extending laterally from it, said sleeve being provided with means for securing it upon the handle in any position to which it may be adjusted. An arm extends from the handle and overhangs the tray and is so the fingers 15 on fork 14 intoposition back of shaped as to engage the tops of packages, so the top of the object. By swingin the hanthat by proper manipulation said packages dle the object will be tilted forwar onto the tray and then can be readily lowered and re moved. Where a can or jar is to be removed, the operation above described is repeated, and the concave ortion of the tray will hold thesame centered thereon. By means of the hook 16 buckets or other objects having bails can be readily lifted from shelves. The arm 13 is of course resilient, so as to automatically adjust itself to objects of difierent sizes.
What is claimed is- 1. The combination with a handle; of a tray mounted thereon and having upstanding flanges and a central concavity, and an arm secured to the handle and overhanging the tray.
2. In a device of the character described the combination with an elongated handle; of a tray adjustably mounted on the handle, and an arm secured to the handle and overhanging the tray.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with an elongated handle; of a tray adjustably mounted on the handle and having a central concavity, and an arm secured to the handle and extending over the tray. 4
4. In-a device of the character described can be tilted over onto the tray and then lowered.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combina tions of parts, WlllCll Wlll be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, the lower portion of the handle being removed; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is an elongated handle the upper portion of which is preferably. rectangular in cross-section, as shown at 2, and slidably mounted on this rectangular portion is a sleeve 3, having a s ring-arm 4 secured at one end thereto, Whife its other end is folded to form a grip 5 and locking-finger 6, which extends at right an les from the arm and is adapted to be seate in any one of a series of recesses 7 in the handle. This arm 4 extends through a guide-loop 8, arranged on the sleeve. Extending laterally from the sleeve 3 is a tray 9, having upturned flanges 10 along the sides thereof, While formed longithe combination with a handle; of a tray adjustably mounted on the handle and having upstanding flanges and a and an arm secured to the handle and extending over the tray.
n a device of the character described the combination with a handle; of a tray thereon and having upstanding flanges and a central concavity, a lip at one end of the tray, and an arm secured to the handle and extending over the tray.
6. In a device of the character described the combination With a handle; of a tray mounted thereon, and a resilient arm fixedly connected to the handle and extending over the tray.
7. In a device of the character described the combination With a handle; of a tray mounted thereon, a resilient arm fixedly connected to the handle and extending over the tray, and a fork at the free end of the arm having depending fingers.
8 In a device of the character described the combination With a handle; of a sleeve mounted on the handle, a spring locking device connected to the sleeve an adapted to engage the handle to hold the sleeve in adjusted position, a flanged and recessed tray extending from the sleeve and having a lip, a resilient forked arm secured to and extending over the tray, and a hook upon the handle.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflfixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN A. WRIGHT.
