T. W. IRVING RECEPTACLE HANDLING IMPLEMENT Filed April 3, 1924 INVENTOR. 2 [R V/NG.
ATTORNEY.
Fatented Aug. 10, 1926.
THOMAS W. IRVING, OF CANTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
RECEPTAOLE-HANDLING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed April 3, 1924. Serial No. 704,067.
This invention relates to receptacle handling or lifting devices and more particularly to a novel and improved specialized tool for handling hot kitchen utensils or vessels containing molten metal.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a novel and improved transporting device in the form of a gripping tool which engages the side and top edge of a vessel whereby it may be lifted and transported from one position to another without tilting the contents or otherwise endangering the individual.
Another object of my invention is the pro vision of a novel and improved tool of the character above specified which is extremely simple in construction, highly etlicient in operation and use, durable, practical, easily manufactured and capable of a multiplicity of uses in the various arts.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawings, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side view showing the application and use of my invention.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a conventional type of handle which is preferably slotted at one end to receive the extension 6 of a stationary arm 7, the latter being preferably riveted as at 8, forming a rigid construction. The neck portion 9 of the metal is bent downwardly. and upwardly on itself as indicated at 10, 11, to reinforce the stationary arm at this point. The upwardly bent portion 11, heretofore referred to is continued downwardly in spaced relation to form a tapered tongue 12, which is adapted to fit over the bead 13 of the conventional type of cooking utensil.
The movable bearing lever 14 overlies the top of the handle 5 and is slotted as at 15 to provide a pair of L-shaped arms 16. The movable lever 14 is pivoted as at 17 whereby the curved extren'iities 18 of the L-shaped arm may be moved with relation to the tongue 12 in gripping. Attached to the handle 5, I have provided a curved clamp 19, the latter being preferably riveted as at 20 to the side of the handle and as shown, extends beyond the opposite side thereof, terminating in an outwardly curved portion 21., which partially overlies the top face of the said handle. By pressing the curved portion 21 outwardly with the thumb,-the movable handle 14 may be raised and as the tongue 12 fits over the top of the vessel, the movable bearing lever downwardly by the hand so as to bring the curved ends 18 into engagement With the side of the vessel thus firmly gripping the same.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and United States Letters Patent is A detachable handle comprising 'a pair of pivoted arms, one of which, at its outer end is bent upon itself to form a yieldable jaw into which the edge of a vessel to be lifted, is disposed, the end of said jawv comprising a downwardly projecting tapered lip, and the other of said arms being bifurcated, to form projected vessel engaging members, said members being curved at their outer ends to provide yielding portions for contact with the surface of the vessel.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature.
T oMAs w. IRVING. [1 5.
