Description

TONGS Filed Feb. 21, 1928 Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT oFFics.
TONGS.
Application filed February 21, 1928.
This invention relates to improvements in tongs, the general object of the invention being to provide means for picking up various objects and to make the tip of each jaw part so that the device can be used as a stove lid lifter.
Another object of the invention is to provide spring means for normally holding the jaw parts in open position and. for limiting the openng movement of the device.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of the tongs.
Figure 2 is an edge view thereof.
Figure 8 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4L is a view of the spring.
In these views, A and B indicate the two members of the tongs, each of which is formed with a handle part 1, a jaw part 2 and a straight central part 3, this part 3 having its ends offset in opposite directions, with the jaw part connected with one end and the handle part connected with the other end. The tip of each jaw part slopes inwardly, as shown at 4, so that this part can be used for lifting a stove lid by placing said part in the eye of the lid.. Each handle part is slightly rounded as shown to fit the hand of the user.
A coil spring 5 has its ends extended, as at 6, with an eye 7 formed at the extremity of each end, these eyes receiving the bolt 8 which also passes through the centers of the Serial No. 256,024.
Thus the coil tends to hold. the tongs in open position and the coil with its limbs 6 also acts to limit the outward movement of the parts. Ears 9 are formed on the central portions 3 and are bent over the ends or limbs 6 to fasten these limbs to the central portions.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the handle members are grasped in the hand and pressure applied to them, the tips of the members 4 will be brought together so that the device can be used for picking up various articles, the device being long enough to permit heated articles to be picked up without the heat being transmitted to the hand of the user.
As before stated, the device can be used as a stove lid lifter by placing one of the parts 4 in the eye of the lid.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of, the appended claim.
What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a pair of members, a pin for pivoting the members together, each member comprising a jaw part and a handle part, a coil spring placed between the handle parts and having its ends extended and fastened to the pivot pin, and ears on the members, bent over the extended ends of the spring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature WILLIAM M. BOLT.
