Description

E. ,REED.
ICE TONGS. 7 APPLICATION FILED APR. 22.
Patented Apr. 18, 1922.
WITNESSES ATTORNEY un ts I STA-res P ELLA Runner OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA-.5
v Ion Tones,
" Application filed April 2 2, 18 2 1. Serial l lo. 4.51 495. i
T 0 all whom itmay concern." I a Beit known that'l, ELnaR-nnn, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Oklahoma,
in the county ofOklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Ice Tongs, of which the following is a specification." I I I t This invention relates to'ice tongs.
This invention is to provide ice'ftongs which are particularly adapted for family use where,*in a great many instances, it is necessary forthe purchaser to handle and carry the smaller cuts ofic'e'some distance,
and it is desirable to have a small, co npact device for the purpose. i I I Another object-is to'provide a pair of tongs of this character, which is simple of construction, strongfjand' durable and capable ofself-adjustment to receive and carry cuts of ice of varying dimensions and to offera' comfortable gripping portion'to the hand ofthe operator so as to avoid tirlng or injuring the same.
A further object is to provide apair ice tongs which 'Inay-be doubled or folded upon itself insjuch manner as-to occupy I only' half of its normal ispace,-- so as to render the same capable of being carried in the pocket if desired, the device being manufactured of stock material'and constructed in such simple manner as to be readily manufactured and sold at a low cost. 2 v
A full and complete understanding ofthc invention may be obtained from a consideration of the-following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming apart of this specification; it being understood that while 'the drawing shows a practical form of the in-- vention, the latter is not confined to strict conformity therewith, butinay be changed or modified, so long as such changes or modificaticns mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims. v
"In the drawing, in which similar reference I characters designate. corresponding parts throughout the several. figures Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tongs in engagement with a maximum size piece'of ice, the hand of the operatorbeing indicated in dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the tongs removed from the ice' and shown in" folded posit on; a

handy device for domestic use has been a long-felt want.

The hook portions 3+1?comprisetermL nals of downwardly and outwardly bowed, portions 5-5 adapted to reach down and] around the ends of. the ice cake, and extendin'g from longitudinally disposed shanks 6-6 of substantiallyequallength and, as thus far describechthe two -tongs are identical in construction.
The rod comprising the tong 1 is returned upon itselfto-form an .endloop 7 and the, terminalp'ortion 8 thereof extendedparallel to the shank 6 of saidtong and in spaced relation-to-the same to provide a longitudinally disposed slot 9, the" end 10 of therod being bent inwardly'to close the slot atits outer end, and it will be observed that the portions 3, 6 and 8 of the tong-l lie in a plane and that when in operative I I I position the loop is in avertlcal'position O-" he other hand, the tong 2 is returned upon itself in a horizontal plane, as at 1 l,-
and is passed through the slot 9 of thefirst namedtong, the longitudinally disposed terminalportion of the rod comprisingthe last-named loop being normally located in a horizontal plane at oneside of theshank'of I the tong 2 and theendthereof is inwardly theouter 1 I The two membersthu's formed and hinged I 1 together comprise a pair of tongs suitable for handling cakes of ice of varying dimensions and sizes within the limits of the maximum opening of the same, and it will be seen that smaller cakes may be as readily grasped by the tongs, the angular relation of the members becoming greater when a smaller cake of ice is being handled, as will be readily understood.
The loop portions of the members form a convenient handle which may be grasped by the hand without injury or discomfort and the weight of the ice will tend to cause the aforesaid angular relation which may be resisted by the hand.
As indicated in Figure 2 of the drawing the two members may be folded to a position where one lies alongside of the other when the device may be readily vglaced in the pocket and carried or hung upon a nail when not in use.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, strong and durableice tongs has been provided, which mav be cheaply manufactured from stock material and sold at a low cost, and that the same is capable of conveniently carrying difierent sized cakes of ice. i
What is claimed is:
1. Ice tongs comprising a pair of hook- 2. Ice tongs comprising a pair of hookshaped members each formed of a single piece of metal, one end of each member terminating in an inwardly directed pointed prong, the other end of the material forming each member, being returned upon itself and the end brought substantially in contact with the body of the member, thereby forming a pair of elongated loops which are interlocked and are in engagement with each other, said loops being arranged in different} planes.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my slgnature.
