R. B. HOGEI'LJSON EXTENSION TONG Filed May 16, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet l Inventor /1 Home y 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed May 16, 1953 Inventor Patented June 5, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to extension tongs and has for its object to provide tongs of this nature which are simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, flexible, easy to manipulate, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which they are designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in View as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of tongs embodying the features of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the head showing an adjacent end of the flexible tube disassembled therefrom.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the handle.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the sliding bar, and
Figure 9 is a perspective view of one of the links.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the numeral 5 denotes an elongated flexible tube. A head 6 has projecting from the center thereof a hollow stub 7 to project into one end of the tube 5 and to be anchored in place by screws 8. Each end of the head 6 is provided with a pair of ears 9. Elongated jaws 10 have ends rockable between the ears 9 by means of pins 11. These jaws are curved in a somewhat ogee manner to provide inwardly offset engaging ends 12. Links 14 are pivotally engaged as at 15 with intermediate portions of the jaws 10 and are pivotally engaged as at 16 with a flexible rod 17 extending through opening 18 in the head 6, through the stub 7 and through the tube 5. A spring 18 is disposed about the rod 17 and impinges against the head 6 and the links 14 for normally holding the jaws in open position. A bail handle 19 is provided with a hollow stub 20 extending into the other end of the tube 5 and anchored therein by means of screws 21. A bar 23 has notched ends 24 slidable on the sides of the bail handle and the rod 17 is fixed to the center of this sliding bar.
Obviously the fingers grasp the bar 23 while the thumb and the palm of the hand extend about the bail handle so that when the hand is closed the rod 17 is pulled and causes the closing of the jaws against the tension of the spring 18. The 0 flexible tube and rod 1'? permit the tongs to be used where it is necessary to go about corners or obstacles and the like.
It is thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite clearly understood by those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
An extension tong comprising an elongated flexible tube, a cross head having a hollow stub extended from the central part of one face thereof into one end of the tube, means for fastening the stub in the tube, a pair of jaws pivotally connected to the ends of the cross head, a pair of links having their outer ends pivotally connected to the inner edges of intermediate portions of the jaws, a flexible rod pivotally connected to the inner ends of the links, said rod passing through the stub and the flexible tube, a bail handle having a hollow stub extending into the other end of the tube and fastened thereto, said flexible rod passing through said stub, a cross piece extending across the bail and to which the flexible rod is connected, portions of the limbs of the bail handle being parallel to each other and the last mentioned cross piece having notches in its ends receiving said portions, and a spring encircling a portion of the flexible rod and having one end bearing against the inner ends of the links and its other end against the cross head.
