Description

Nov. 7, 1944. A. OZDOBINSKI PLATE AND RECEPTACLE LIFTER Filed Jan. 7, 1944 Patented Nov. 7, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
2,362,395 v v I BLATE ANDVRECEPTAVCLE-LIIFTER- Antoni Ozdobinski, Cram Lynne, Pa. Application'January 7, 1944,,Serial-No. 51 1,5116" I 3 Claims.
This invention relatesto' certain new andv useful improvements-in plate andv receptacle lifters.
The primary object of the invention is: to provide a plate and. receptacle lifter that may also be employed for-the handling of various other articles but is rimarily intended for the-lifting and handling. of hot plates or receptacles unprovided with handles.
A furtherobiectof the invention is to provide a lifter of the foregoing character in the form of a pair of clamping arms hingedly connected together at corresponding ends, with the free ends of the arms normally resiliently spaced and adapted for movements toward each other in the gripping of a pan, receptacle or the like for the lifting and handling thereof.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a pan and receptacle lifter wherein a pair of elongated hand-gripping arms are hingedly connected together at corresponding ends with a leaf spring associated with said gripping ends for normally spacing the unconnected ends of the arms to the limits of movement under restriction of a flexible connector between the arms intermedi ate the ends thereof.
With the above and other objects in view that I will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is an edge elevational view of a pan and receptacle lifter constructed in accordance with the present invention,
of the arms, and
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view taken on line 44 of Figure 3, showing the unitary securing means for the hinge butt and leaf spring.
Th device being in the nature of a pair of pliers or tongs and comprising a pair of elongated gripping arms, may be constructed of any suitable material desired and in view of the scarcity of metals, the clamping arms of 'the lifter may be formed of wood, plastic or other synthetic materials and, as-illustrated, the lifter comprises a pair of elongated arms 5 of bar or rod-like form,
illustrated; as being rectangularin cross-section,
but it is to be understood that the designof these arms may be varied desired; k I
Corresponding; ends 5a. of; the arms 5- are hingedly, connected together asillustrated; by
tially U-shape as illustrated with the legs 9 of the leaf spring received in bifurcations or slots [0 formed in the ends 5a of the arms and opening at the ends of said arms. The b ight l i of the leaf spring spans the hinge barrel 1 and in the action thereof normally tends to separate the free 'ends End the arms. To simplify the structure,
the screw devices 8 or other fastening means that are employed for securing the hinge butts II to the arms are also employed for anchoring the legs 9 of the leaf spring in position in the slotted ends 50. of the arms, this arrangement being clearl illustrated in Figures 3 and 4.
To limit the separating movements of the free ends 5b of the arms, there is provided a flexible connector l2 passing through openings I3 in the arms 5 intermediate the endssthereof with the outer extended ends of the flexible connector i2 knotted or headed as at M to provide abutments against which the outer sides of the legsengage under influence of the leaf spring H and the length of this flexible connector I2 may be varied for determining the separating movements of the free ends 5b of the arms.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the free ends 5b of the arms are equipped with heads or bands [5 to facilitate gripping. of a pan, receptacle or other object to be lifted and manipulated and said heads or bands may be formed of any material desired, either cushioning, heat-resistant, such as plastic or the like and may be of a nature for gripping cooperation with the beaded edge of a a pan, receptacle or lik article.
.From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the use and construction thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that the side arms 5 may be gripped at the desired points of the lengths thereof for moving the headed ends l5 towards each other against the tension of the leaf spring I I in the act of gripping a pan, receptacle or the like. The flexible connector l2 limits separating movement of the arms, when the device is out of use or during the releasing movement of the lifter with respect to an article with which the same was engaged, and while there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a lifting scribed, a pair of elongated arms, a hinge having a pair of lateral butts with the butts respectively secured to the inner sides of a pair of corresponding ends of the arms, the hingedly connected ends of the arms being bifurcated, a
leaf spring of substantially U-shape with the side legs thereof'respectively located between the *furcations Of an arm and retained therein by the hinge butt securing means, the arms having alined openings therein intermediate the ends,
a flexible cord extending through the opening in each arm and headed at its extended ends to T p'rovide arm engaging abutments for limiting separating movements of the free ends of the arms and a work-engaging head at the free end -of each arm.
device of the character de-g 2. In a lifting device of the character described, a pair of elongated arms, a hinge connection between a pair of adjacent ends of the arms, a spring device associated with the hinged ends for tensioning the free ends of the arms in directions of separating movements, means associated with the arms intermediate the ends thereof for limiting separating movements of the free ends of the arms, and unitary means for securing the hinge connection and spring device to the arms.
3. In a lifting device of the character described, a pair of elongated arms, a hinge connection between a pair of adjacent ends of the arms, a spring device associated with the hinged ends for tensioning the free ends of the arms in directions of separating movements, means associated with the arms intermediate the ends including a hinge barrel with lateral butts, the
butts being respectively secured to the inner sides of the arms and the spring device including a leaf spring, the hinged ends of the arms "having end opening slots and the ends of V the leaf spring being disposed in said-slots and re 'tained therein by the hinge butt securing means.
