Application March 24, 1952, Serial No. 278,146 Claims; (01. 51-487) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sanding blocks and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a sanding block so constructed. as to permit the same to be grasped close to its center of gravity, whereby the same may be used and manipulated in a convenient manner.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a sanding block having novel and improved means for removably securing a sanding sheet thereto in a convenient manner so that the sheet may be removed readily and replaced by a new sheet.

A further object of the present invention is to provide a surface treating member including a long handle and novel and improved means for removably attaching the handle to the member so that the member may be held into contact with a surface by a user disposed close to or remote from the surface.

A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a surface treating member that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, neat and attractive in appearance, small and compact in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the present invention and showing the handle removed therefrom;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken substantially through the center of Figure 1 and with the handle applied;

Figure 3 is a plan view of the invention showing the hand grip pivoted to clear the ends of the base member, whereby the abrasive sheet may be applied to or removed from the base member; and

Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I i! represents an elongated substantially rectangular base member of any suitable light-weight material, having a central frusto-conical recess or well :2 in its upper face and a central aperture l4 whose lower end is formed with a countersink I6.

A screw i8 extends upwardly through the aperture I 4 and its head 20 is positioned in the countersink IS. The screw it receivably engages a nut 22 that forces a washer 24, about the screw, downwardly against the bottom wall of recess i2 to clampingly secure the screw to the base member III.

A flat substantially H-shaped hand grip '26 overlies the base member ID and includes a pair of parallel portions 28 and 39 that are joined by-a cross portion 32. Gripping ribs 34 and 36 are provided on the undersurfaces of the p01 tions 28 and 30 and overlie the ends of the base member ID. The side edges 38 of the cross portion 32 are convex and curve downwardly toward the recess [2 and the center of portion 32 is formed with an aperture 40 that receives the screw l8.

A central recess 42 is provided in the upper face of the hand gripping portion 32 about the aperture 40 and receives a wing nut 44 threaded on the upper end of the screw 18.

Means is provided for removably securing a handle 46 to the hand grip 26. This means com-' prises a V-shaped wire attaching element 48 having a loop 50 formed at its apex that enters a slot in the outer end of the handle 46. A fastener 52 extends through the handle 46 and the loop 58 to removably secure the handle to the element 48.

The hand grip 26 is formed with a pair of downwardly diverging openings or apertures 54 in which metallic sleeves 56 are fitted. The sleeves 56 yieldingly receive the ends of element 48.

In practical use of the present invention, the nut 44 is backed up and the hand grip 26 swung to the position shown in Figure 3, whereby the ends of an abrasive sheet or surface treating member M may be folded over the ends of the base member In.

Hand grip 26 is then swung over the base member so that the ribs 34, 36 engage the ends of the sheet M. Then the nut 44 is tightened to clamp the ends of sheet M against the upper face of base member I.

A user will grasp portion 32 with one hand and the hand will enter reces l2 and will extend over the wing nut 44 and the upper end of screw l8, to position the users hand close to the sheet M, thereby facilitating convenient manipulation of the base member.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

' 1. A sanding block comprising an elongated rigid base; member-having upper and lower faces,

said base member also having a-centralrecess in its upper face, a substantially H-shaped hand grip overlying the base member and including a pair of parallel end portions of a length sub stantially equal to the width of the base member and a cross portion joining intermediate parts: of said parallel end portions and extending immediately above the recess, whereby a user's hand disposed about the cross portion willienter the recess, and a combined pivot and fastener extending centrally through the base member and the crossportion.
