ElNlT ED' STATES B R e-DEM r FORT Me rie DISH AND PLATE LIFTER. I i
T 0 all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, ROBERT NADEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Kent, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Dish and Plate Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to culinary utensils and more particularly to lifters for pans, plates and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, cheap and eificient device of this character which may be quickly applied and removed by a simple twist of the wrist.' lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a plate lifter constructed in accordance with this invention shown applied.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof with the fixed jaw shown open in dotted lines.
vFig. 3 is a plan view thereof with a part of the pie pan broken out to show the application of the lifter.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line l4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of one end of the handle showing the connection of the jaws.
In the embodiment illustrated. a handle 1 is shown composed of wood or other suitable material which may be of any desired length and which is substantially flat throughout the length thereof to adapt it to be readily grasped and held. Fixedlymounted on the front end of the handle 1 is aclamping jaw 2 with which cooperates a swinging jaw 10. These two jaws 2 and 10 are exactly alike in configuration, the only difference being that the jaw 2 is fixedly mounted relatively to the handle 1 while the jaw 10 is loosely mounted to swing toward and away from jaw 2 to adapt thejaws to clampingly engage a plate, pan or the like to be lifted.
The fixed jaw 2 is composed of a stiff piece of wire bent into substantially U- shaped form with inturned hooks 8 formed at the corners thereof which are formed by folding the wire and bending it as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. The free ends of the arms of member 2 are'bent at points Application filed May 24, 1922. Serial No, 563,328.
spaced from their terminals to form eyes i which are designed to lie close *againstithe lower or inner face of theha-hdle 'l' iwheii the jaw is connected therewith: This haiiclle l is provided with longitudinally tures 5 through which'the free H member 2 are designed to be passed and which after being passed through said' ap'er tures are bent around one edgeo'f thefhand le as shown at 6-and then extended transversely across the lower face of'the handle and bent {upwardly around the opposite edge thereof and clampingly engaged therewith as shown at 7. The threading of these ends through the handle 1 forms a loop substantially in the form of the figure 8, as is shown ends" ofthe clearlyin Fig. 4 and rigidly secures the jaw 2 to the handle with the eyes 4 thereof in close proximity to the handle.
The swingingly mounted jaw 10 is also composed of a piece of heavy wire bent into substantially U-shaped form with inturned hook-like members 11 at the corners thereof similar to the members 3 of the other jaw, and which are designed to hook under the flange of a plate or pan to be lifted, as is shown clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The free ends of the arms of the jaw 10 are passed through the eyes 4 and bent into closed loops or eyes 12, thereby loosely hinging said jaw 10 to the jaw 2 adjacent the lower face of the handle 1.
The threading of the ends of the arms of the jaw 2 in the manner above described positions said jaw 2 laterally from one edge of the handle 1 and jaw 10 is hingedly connected to swing down substantially parallel with jaw 2 and to cooperate therewith in lifting a plate or pan.
In the use of the device, the movable or swinging jaw 10 is first engaged with the flange of the pan or plate to be lifted and then by turning the handle 1 to swing jaw 2 inwardly, the hooks 3 carried at the corners thereof, are engaged with the plate or pan at a point diametrlcally opposite to that engaged by jaw 10 and on exerting a lifting movement on the handle 1 the pan will'be firmly gripped and held engaged by the lifter, so that it may be transported from place to place without danger of dropping it This lifter is especially useful in lifting pans from ovens, thereby avoiding all danger of the user burning her hands or arms when reaching for a pan or plate in the back of the oven.
spaced -aper-.-
By constructing the handle 1 of wood or other suitable heat insulating material, the.
lifter may be engaged with a nan and left engaged therewith so that this handle-will not become hot and may be manipulated without danger of burning the operators hands.
When not in use, the jaws 2 and 10 are folded one on the other and the implement will oc'cupy'a minimum amount of space.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the'specification, but it will be understood that that any modifications within scope of the claimed invention ma in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:
In a device of the class described, a fiat handle member havingcentrally positioned spaced apertures therethrough, a rigid U- shaped aw member extending at right "angles from said handle and parallel with the under surface thereof each leg of said jaw member having a loop at a point moved from the inner end and further ex: tended through said aperture and looped around one side edge of said handle and further extended against the lower face of the Witness to mark:
THEODULE ALBERT.
