Description

G. E. TANT.
STOVE LID LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 23. 1914.
1,178,425. Patented Apr. 4,1916.
ITED sT TEsPATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. TANT, 0F NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
To allwhom itmay'concem." Be it known that I, GEORGE E. TANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at -Nashville, in the cormty. of 'Davidson and The present invention contemplates the provision of a device, which while primarily intended for use as a stove lid lifter, 1s capable of lifting culinary utensils, cake pans and the like.
The invention aims to provide a device of this character comprising a pair of freely pivoted jaws associated withthe handle in a manner to facilitate their association with the article to be'lifted, and to effectively grip the same, thereby diminishing the liability of dropping the article, the device being so constructed that the heavier the article to be lifted the more effective is the gripping action of the jaws when the article is elevated.
In carrying out the invention it is my purpose to provide the upper jaw with a hook terminal for use in the capacity of opening oven doors as well as pulling pans and the like toward the door opening therefor, the hook being extended beyond the lower jaw to provide a guiding surface for automatically lifting the jaw to facilitate the association of the jaws with the lid, or the edge of the article to be lifted.
Among other features whioh'will appear from the following description, the invention embodies simplicity in construction, durability and efiiciency in its purpose.
In the drawing forming a part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of the same applied to a stove lid. Fig. 4 is a view of the same used in connection with a pan.
Referring to the drawing in detail 5 des ignates the lower jaw of substantially rectangular formation in cross section, and having its free end curved upwardly as at 6. Fixed upon the jaw 5 is a U-shaped member 7 forming a bearing, between the parallel sides 8 of which is pivoted the shank 9 of the handle 10, the latter being constructed from any suitable material and of the desired shape.
Straddling the U-shaped member 7 at one Specification of Letters latent.

portion of its length, terminating, at its forf ward end to provide the book 14 for the purpose to be hereinafter described. The
tail portion 15 of the jaw 12 overlies the U- shaped member 7, in which the free end of the shank 9 operates in the capacity of a cam for engagement with the tail portion 15 for moving the jaw to closed position. By reason of this construction, it will be manifest that the heavier the articleto be lifted themore eifective'is the clamping action of the jaws. v V
The hook portion l4extends beyond the free end of the jaw 5,-thus providing a guiding surface 16 for automatically lifting the jaw 12 to permit both of the jaws to properly engage the article .to be lifted. It is to be further noted, that by reason of the pivotal connection of the jaw 5 with the shank 7, and the fact that the jaw 12 is freely pivoted on the jaw 5, that both ofthe jaws normally assume an angular position with relation to the handle to facilitate the operative association with the lid, pan or other article to be elevated. In addition to providing a guiding surfacefor automatically lifting or opening the jaws 12, the hook portion 14 thereof is intended for use in opening oven doors, and for withdrawing articles from within the oven toward the door opening thereof, thus. eliminating all danger of burning the hands,

other heavy articles to be lifted without the use of a cloth and without burning the hands.
It is believed that from the foregoing description, the natureand advantages of the invention will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation, and
therefore the same has been omitted. However I desire to have it understood that varimally in spaced relation thereto and adapted to be acted upon thereby, intermediate spaced ears depending from said hook member, said ears straddling the plates and freely pivoted thereto whereby said hook normally assumes an angular position with relation to said handle, and the bill of said hook normally engaging the projecting portion of said base.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' GEORGE E. TANT.
