2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved tool fon cutting metal binding straps to facilitate their removal from boxes, bales and the like.
More particularly, the invention consists in the provision of a simple, rugged and eflicient binding strap cutting tool composed of two separate parts, each comprising a handle member having strap engaging jaws at one end thereof, The jaw end of one handle member comprises two laterally spaced pairs of jaws adapted to be slipped over the strap from one side while the jaw end of the other handle member comprises, a single pair of jaws adapted to be slipped over the strap from the opposite side to embrace the portion of the strap lying between the first mentioned jaws, the three pairs of jaws cooperating in response to angular movement of the handles to cut off that portion of the strap which is spanned by the central pair of jaws.
Proceeding now to a more detailed description of the invention reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a plan view of the handle member equipped with two laterally spaced pairs of jaws.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the handle member and jaw assembly shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the handle member equipped with a single pair of jaws.
Fig. 4.- is an edge view of the handle member and jaw assembly shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a plan view showing how the jaws of the two handle members are engaged with a metal binding strip prior to the angular movement of the handle members which results in the cutting off of that portion of the strap which is spanned by the central pair of jaws.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 and 6 designate separately formed handle members, each equipped with strap engaging jaws at one end thereof.
Handle member 5 is equipped with two laterally spaced pairs of jaws 1 formed integral with a crosshead enlargement 8 of said handle member. The jaws l of each pair are formed with flat strap engaging faces 1a spaced apart a distance only slightly greater than the thickness of the binding strip to be cut.
The seconding handle member 6 is provided, at one end, with a single pair of jaws 9 corresponding to the jaws l and having correspondingly jaw 9 of handle member 6 is then slipped over the strap from the opposite side so as to embrace that portion of the strap which lies between the jaws I. The handle members 5 and B are then moved angularly toward each other as indicated by the arrows X in Fig. 5 to eifect a corresponding angular movement of the jaws l of handle member 5 relative to the jaws 9 of handle member 8. During this angular movement thereof the jaws 9 cooperate with the jaws 1 to cut oil that portion of the strap l0 which lies between the jaws I and is spanned by the jaws 9.
The jaws I of handle member 5 and the jaws 9 of handle member 6 are tapered as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 to facilitate slipping the jaws over a binding strap which is tightly secured in place around a box or bale.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and a preferred embodiment thereof, it will be understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope and spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A two-part metal strap cutting tool of the character described comprising a part having two laterally spaced pairs of jaws adapted to he slipped over the strap from one side and a second part having a single pair of jaws adapted to be slipped over the strap from the other side to span that portion of the strap lying between the first mentioned jaws, the width of the single pair of jaws carried by the second mentioned part being approximately equal to the width of the space between the two pairs of jaws carried by the first mentioned part.

A two-part strap cutting tool of the character described comprising an elongated handle member provided, at one end, with two laterally spaced jaw extensions, each extension being provided with a slot extending inwardly from the free end thereof and dividing said extension into upper and lower jaw members of a width substantially greater than the distance between the spaced opposing surfaces of said jaw members, said jaw members being adapted to be slipped over the strap from one side thereof and a second elongated handle member provided, at one end, with a single jaw extension having a slot extending inwardly from the free end thereof and dividing said extension into upper and lower jaw members adapted to he slipped over the strap 3 4 from the opposite side and to be snugly received UNITED STATES PATENTS in the space between the jaw extensions of the Number Na e Da first handle member, the jaws of the second han- N m te 170,658 Berndge Dec. 7, 1875 dle member bemg also of a Wldth substantlally t th t t th r 1,588,982 Norton June 15, 1926 grea er than e (115 ance be ween e11 opposlng 5 1,812,350 Lingwood June 30, 1931 strap engagmg surfaces.
