Description

This invention relates to a novel clamp for securing the ends of cables together.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a clamp of the above kind which is efilcient in use, simple and inexpensive to manufacture, and capable of being quickly and easily placed in use without the exercise of special skill. More particularly, the present invention relates to an improved cable clamp including a pair of cooperating clamping members having intermediate jaw portions provided with recesses for accommodating the ends of the cables to be clamped together, said clamping members being hinged together at corresponding ends and being provided at their remaining ends with cooperating ears adapted to receive a bolt whereby the clamping members may be efiectively drawn and secured together for securely clamping the cable ends therebetween.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a cable clamp of the above character wherein the cable clamping members are of such form and construction as to insure eflicient clamping action and to facilitate application of the clamp to the cables.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a cable clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention, and illustrating the cable clamp as it appears in use.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of one of the clamping members forming part of the cable clamp shown in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the other clamping member forming part of the cable clamp shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the present cable clamp consists of a pair of clamping members 5 and 6 having intermediate jaw portions provided at their inner sides with transverse recesses and 8' for accommodating the ends of the cables 9 and H! to be clamped together. The clamping members 5 and 6 are hingedly connected together at corresponding ends by means of a pivot pin [land are provided at their remaining ends with ears I2 and 13 adapted for reception of a bolt l4 having a nut I 5 threaded thereon. Obviously, by tightening the nut [4, the clamping members 5 and 6 will be drawn together so as to securely clamp the cables 9 and I0 therebetween. .Only one bolt is required and this may be readily applied or removed for convenience in applying or removing the clamp. As shown more clearly in Figures 2 and 4, the clamping member 5 is of plate-like form and relatively wide, being formed at one end with spaced knuckles It. On the other hand, the clamping member 6 is relatively narrow and formed at one end with a single knuckle ll of a width adapted to be snugly received between the knuckles E6 of the clamping member 5. The hinge pin ii is inserted in the knuckles l6 and ill of the clamping members 5 and 6 to hingedly connect them together at their corresponding ends as above noted.

In use, the cable 9 is placed in the recess 1 of the wider clamping member 5 and then the second cable in is disposed upon the cable 9 beneath the horns l8 and I9, the latter cable being maintained in proper position while the clamping member 6 is swung into engagement with said cable l9 and connected by the bolt M with the clamping member 5. The nut l5 isthen applied and tightened so as to securely clamp the cables together in proper parallel contiguous relation, overlapped one upon the other. In order to provide maximum engagement of the clamping member 5 with the surface of the cable 9, the recess 1 of said clamping member 5 is provided with spiral grooves 29 receiving the adjacent strands of the cable 9.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and manner of use, as well as the advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. It will be seen that I have provided a very simple and durable cable clamp which will be very efiicient for the intended purpose as well as convenient to use. Minor changes in the details of construction illustrated and described are contemplated within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is:
A cable clamp of the character described comprising a pair of clamping members having outwardly arch-ed intermediate jaw portions provided at their inner sides with opposed transverse lrecesses for accommodating the ends of the cables to be clamped together, one of said clamping members being of relatively wide plate-like form and provided at one end with spaced hinge knuckles and at the other end with an ear, the other clamping member being relatively narrow and provided at one end with an ear and at the other end with a single hinge knuckle received between and hinged to the hinge knuckles of the first-named clamping member, inwardly projecting horns on the hinge knuckles and on the ear 10 of said first-named clamping member, said horns ARTHUR W.
