l filaim. 1

This invention relates to pliers especially adapted for general use by jewelers and watch makers in handling and operating on certain watch and jewelry parts, but particularly adapted to hold an end link or attaching member of an expansible bracelet while filing the ends of the longer barrel thereof to fit the link to a watch and the rest of the bracelet, and to close the barrels of the link upon the pivot pins which connect the link to the rest of the bracelet and the watch.

If bracelet end links and like parts are gripped by ordinary pliers, they are marred by the serrated or roughened jaws of such pliers, and they are not held satisfactorily to readily and quickly perform good work thereon. To hold these small parts with the fingers while working thereon is highly unsatisfactory and detrimental to the fingers.

The primary object of the invention, there-. fore, is to provide special pliers by means of which bracelet end links and like small watch and; jewelry parts may be efiectively held while working thereon, so as to facilitate rapid performance of good work with ease and comfort.

Another object is to provide special pliers which will efiectively hold a bracelet end link so that the hand gripping the pliers will be out of the way or removed from the file used for fitting purposes in filing the ends of the longer barrel of the link.

Still another object is to provide special pliers which will not mar the bracelet end link and which may be used to effectively close the barrels of the link upon the pins which connect the link to the rest of the bracelet and the watch.

The exact nature of the present invention, as well as advantages thereof, will become apparent from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of pliers constructed in accordance with the present invention.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view thereof.

Figure 3 is an inner side elevational view of one of the jaw carrying handles of the pliers, and

Figure 4 is a fragmentary plan view showing the grooved face of one of the jaws of the pliers and the adjacent portion of its handle.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the present pliers comprise a pair of similar pivotally connected crossed handles 5 and 6 having similar co-acting elongated transverse jaws I and 8 rigid with corresponding ends thereof.

g 1 and 8 are similarly disposed at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the handles and have adjacent fiat faces 9 provided with open mating longitudinal grooves ID of semi-circular form in cross-section.

The grooves H) are located close to the front edges of the jaws so as to provide narrow face portions 9a which may pass between the long barrel a and the short barrel b of a bracelet end 10 link of the type indicated at in Patent No.

The jaws 1,828,493, granted October 2'7, 1931, to E. Ermburst. Also, each groove [0 is of a radius corresponding to the proper radius of the barrel a when closed upon its pivot pin. It will thus be apparent that the pliers may be readily employed for closing the barrels a and b of the end link by pressing the hand grip portions of the handles together and thereby forcing the jaws l and 8 together. Also, the longer barrel a may be readily gripped so as to project beyond the ends of the jaws I and 8 which are most remote from the hand gripping the handles, as shown in Figure 2. This positions the link at an angle so that the hand gripping the pliers is out of the way or removed from a file c when the latter is used to file the end of the longer barrel a to reduce its length for fitting purposes.

As the grooves ill are smooth, the barrel of the end link will not be marred when gripped between the jaws 1 and 8. By making the jaws of elongated form, they can be effectively employed for gripping long sections of tubing and similar long parts while operating thereon.

In constructing the pliers, each of the handles is preferably notched or recessed intermediate its ends as at ll so that the handles may be halved together intermediate their ends where they cross each other and are pivoted together by means of a transverse pivot pin l2, in a manner well-known in the art. Of course, the notches II are made of such form and width as to permit necessary relative pivotal movement of the handles.

From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction, manner of use, and advantages of the present invention will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. Minor changes are contemplated, such as fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

What I claim is:

A pair of pliers adapted to hold an end link of an expansible bracelet while filing the ends of the longer barrel thereof to fit the link to a watch and the rest of the bracelet, comprising a pair of similar pivotally connected crossed handles, similar coacting elongated transverse jaws rigidly joined intermediate their ends to corresponding ends of said handles and disposed at an oblique angle to the longitudinal axis of the handles, each jaw being provided with a flat face having a longitudinal groove of semi-cylindrical form extending from end to end thereof, said jaws mating so that a hollow cylinder is formed by the grooves, said grooves being located adjacent the front edges of the jaws to provide narrow portions of the jaws at the front of said grooves adapted to pass between the barrels of a bracelet end link with one of said barrels securely gripped Within said grooves for holding the link or closing the gripped barrel thereof.
