1 Claim. (Cl. 24-437 This invention relates to a clamp as for a clothesline or the like.

It is an object of this this invention to provide a clamp for a clothesline of the kind to be more particularly described hereinafter for releasably clamping clothes, or the like, on a clothes line.

It is another object of this invention to provide an improved clamp for a clothesline of this kind which is moveable, by free sliding along the length of the clothesline and is so formed for the passage of line connections, as knots, while the clamp is being moved therealong with the clothes suspended therefrom.

Another object of this invention is to provide a clothesline clamp of this kind which is relatively easy for manufacture and operable by the fingers of a person hanging or removing clothes from a line.

Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof defined in the appended claim.

To this time clamps of various sorts have been used for clamping clothes onto a clothesline but frequently the clamps have been loosened from their clamping position by the weight of the clothes being supported on the clotheslines. By this invention I propose to clamp the clothes and the clamp itself to the clothesline in such a manner that the clothes, depending from the clothesline, will also serve to hold the clamp in its clamping position.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally a clamp constructed according to an embodiment of my invention.

The clamp 10 is' formed with a pair of longitudinally extending arms 11 pivotally connected together intermediate the length thereof with one hinge arm 12 engageable between a pair of laterally spaced apart hinge arms 14 the hinge arm 12 being formed integral with one of the hinge arms 11 and the hinge arm 14 being formed on or integral with the other arm 11. These arms 11 are hingedly connected together by a pivot pin 15 which engages through the arms 12and 14 particularly notable in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

One of the arms 11 is provided with a pair of laterally spaced apart clamping plates 16 on one end thereof and 2,840,874 Patented July 1, 1958 V the other arm 11 has a loop 17 engageable between the plates 16 which is clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The loop 17 and plates 16 are particularly adapted to clampingly secure a garment therebetween when the clamp is in its closed position as urged by the resilient means to be hereinafter described and a line is adapted to loosely engage through the loop or ring 17 so that the clamp will dependingly remain on the line.

Each of the plates 16 is formed with a segmental slot 18 spaced outwardly from the supporting arm 11. A segmental slot 19 is provided in the loop 17 immediately adjacent to its respective arm 11 as clearly noted in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When the arms 11 are urged to their position for clampingly engaging a clothesline the segmental slots will be' placed in registration with each other for engagement on the opposite sides of a clothesline separate from the plates 16 and loop 17 herebefore described.

Each of the arms 11 is provided with a handle 20 remote from the hinge pin 15 and at the end opposite from the clamping jaws for both the clothesline and the materialto be suspended therefrom.

Each of the handles 20 has transversely extending slots 21 therein so that the handles may be pressed together by the fingers of a person applying the clamps 10 to a clothesline with or Without the material to be dried suspended therefrom.

Resilient means, as the coiled spring 22, is supported on each of the arms 11 adjacent the end thereof remote from the clamping jaws and pivot pin 15 so that the clamp 10 will be normally closed but may be moved to its opened position by the fingers of a person either applying the clamp to a clothesline or removing it therefrom.

By the application of the clamp 10 to a clothesline it can be seen that the clamp will engage both the clothesline and the material to be suspended therefrom in the clamping jaws.

While the specific details of one embodiment of this invention have been herein shown and described, the invention is not confined thereto as changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined in the appended claim.

I claim:

An improved clothes and clothesline clamp of the kind described comprising a pair of elongated arms pivotally connected together intermediate the ends thereof, a pair of laterally spaced apart clamping plates on one end of one of said arms, a loop on one end of the other of said arms positioned longitudinally of said other arm engageable between said plates, each of said plates having arcuate transversely aligned segmental slots spaced outwardly from said one arm, an arcuate transversely segmental slot in said loop for alignment with said first mentioned segmental slots to receive a clothesline and resilient means engaging between said arms adjacent the other end thereof urging said one ends of said arms together into clamping relation to each other.
