This invention relates to pipe wrenches, and more particularly to pipe wrenches of the strap type especially adapted for use in connection with smooth cylindrical surfaces.
Pipe wrenches of the strap type haveloeen found highly desirable because of their ability to be readily adjusted to accommodate many sizes of pipe, and at all times insuring a positive grip, However, the structure of strap wrenches heretofore employed has rendered their adjustment-somewhat inconvenient due to the difiiculty of sliding the strap through slots in thewrench, the strap having its natural tendency to bind and resist sliding movement. Also, some care and skill is required in properly adjusting the strap to the proper tightness about a pipe to enable rapid and effective manipulation.
It is an object of this invention to provide a strap wrench having a strap which may be readily and conveniently adjusted without the usual annoyance due to binding.
A .further object is the provision of a strap wrench which may be quickly adjusted to a pipe without any especial care or skill, and without affecting the gripping action.

Referring to the drawing, in Figure 1 is shown the preferred form of our invention, in which a strap wrench includes a block 5, having at one side thereof an in- 65 clined slot 6 passing through one side of I the block and the rounded gripping surface 7 of the block, said gripping surface 7 projecting beyond each side of the block.

The strap 16 is preferably made from a strong fabric and has an inner coating 20 of a desirable non-slipping mate rial, such as carborundum, garnet, crepe rubber, or the like. 3
In some instances, it is desired to make the wrench double acting, that is, able to turn a pipe in either direction without adjustment of the strap, as in the form shown in Figure 5. For this purpose, the block 5 is provided with the inclined slot 19, opposite to and similar to the slot 6. The strap is passed around the pipe asabove described, and then through the slot 19, and thenover the inclined surface 9 and'between theears 10. The pipe may now be rotated in either direction by causing the flat surface 13 of the head 12 to grip either inclined surface 9 or inclined surface 8.
It is not essential that the surfaces 8 and 9 be inclined, as far as the gripping action is concerned, but by making them inclined there is less cutting action on the strap and this feature is of considerable importance in increasing the life of the strap.
In Figures 6 and 7 is shown a modified formof the invention in which a block tachably fixed therein,
has a pair of inclined slots 31' and 32 therein, which pass through the sides of the block and the gripping surface 33 of the block. A strap 36 passes through slot 31 and is de preferably by means such asja pin 37 which prevents the strap from being pulled through slot 31. The strap is looped above the surface 33 and the free end of the strap is then passed through inclined slot 32 and thence through a transverse slot 34 in the block. If desired, the free end of the strap 36 may, instead, be first passed through the slot 31, then looped over the surface 33 and the opposite side of the block, and thence through the transverse slot 34 of the block, as shown in dotted lines -in- Figure 7. A handle 35 is detachably connected to the block. The above structure is double-acting, and enables a pipeto .be rotated in either directionwithout neces- V sitating adjusting the strap. The strap 36 said opposite flat Without departing from the general scope herein indicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A strap wrench, comprising a block having an inclined slot therein and a fiat surface, ears projecting from said block, a head pivoted to the ears, a strap passing through and fixed in the slot, and a flat surface on the head adapted to cooperate with the fiat surface of the block to tightly grip the strap.
2. A strap Wrench, comprising a block having a slot therein and a rounded gripping surface projecting beyond the sides of the block, said block having an inclined flat surface on the side opposite the rounded gripping surface, a strap passing through the slot and over the inclined surface, a head pivotally connected to the block, said head having a flat surface substantially parallel to and cooperating with the inclined fiat surface to grip the strap, and a handle attached to the head.
3. A strap wrench, comprising a block having a strap attached to one side thereof, said block having an inclined flat surface over which the strap passes, and a head pivota lly connected to the block, said head having a fiat surface adapted to cooperate with the inclined flat surface to tightly grip the strap.
. 4. Astrap wrench, comprising a block having a strap attachedthereto, said block having a gripping surface and an opposite fiat surface over which thestrap passes, and a head pivotally connected to the block, said head having a flat surface cooperating with surface to tightly grip the strap.

While the above description discloses the strap wrench adapted for useon pipes and the like, it is obvious that the strap Wrench may be made of many sizes and may be readily-adapted for use in various situations, and may be used as a kitchen utensil, for removing screw type covers from jars, bottles and the like. r I
