Application August 21, 1951, Serial No. 242,834
1 Claim.
This invention relates to watchmakers tools, and more particularly to a tool or pliers comprising a pair of pivoted handles for detachably clamping a cannon pinion, a roller, a jewel, a second or minute hand, a crown, a hair spring, etc., in order to permit the latter to be tightened or removed.
One object of the invention is to provide a watchmakers tool of the above nature having an adjusting screw whereby the pressure exerted on the pinion or other article clamped thereby may be varied.
A further object is to provide a watchmakers tool of the above nature in which the adjusting screw is provided with an associated circular indicating scale and index to show the degree of adjustment of the screw.
A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to install and manipulate, compact ornamental in appearance, and very efficient and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view there has been illustrated on the accompanying drawing one form in which the invention may conveniently be embodied in practice.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a side view of the watchmakers pliers embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, on a larger scale, looking at the clamping jaws.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view, taken along the line 4--6 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring now to the drawing, in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numerals Ill and l I indicate generally the jaws of the watchmakers tool, comprising a pair of handles i 2, I3, pivoted together by a pivot pin l3a, and provided with T-shaped clamping members l4, l5 at the end thereof, opposite from said handles. Each of the clamping members l4, I5 is provided with a series of opposed complementary semicircular recesses l6, ltd, ll, Ila, l8, 18a, l9, l9a, which are adapted to clamp around the article engaged by the pliers.
The numeral 20 indicates a coiled spring for normally holding the jaws 10, l in clamping position, said spring being provided with hooked ends 2!, 22 for engaging the exterior of the handles l2, l3.
In order to limit the pressure upon the cannon pinion or other member being clamped by the tool, provision is made of an adjustable screw 23 rotatably mounted in a tapped hole 24 in the jaw l I and having a knurled handle knob 25 for convenience in manipulation.
Provision is also made of a circular ring scale 26 graduated with cross lines for reference with an index arm 2'1 mounted on the jaw II, for visibly indicating the adjustment of the screw 23. The circular ring scale 26 is located in a rectangular recess 28 between the adjacent handles l0, ll.
Operation In operation, when the user desires to clamp a cannon pinion or other article by the pliers, the handles l2, It will be moved to open position and the cannon pinion inserted between a pair of semi-circular recesses 56, ltd, ll, Ha, l8, Ida, I 9, I912. The handles will then be released, whereupon the spring 26 will press the clamping members together upon the work. The pressure upon the work held by the clamping jaws may be readily adjusted by manipulating the knob 25, and the amount of said pressure may be readily determined by visual observation of the relative position of the index arm 2? and graduated scale 26.
While there has been disclosed in this specification one form in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that this form is shown for the purpose of illustration only and that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosure but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:
In a watehmakers pliers, a pair of crossed plier handles pivoted together between their ends and having work-engaging jaws at one end thereof, a coil spring between said handles for pressing said jaws against the work located therebetween, a stop screw rotatably mounted within a tapped hole in one of said handles, said screw having a manipulating knob at its outer end and having its inner end engaging the other of said handles to limit the pressure which may be exerted upon the work by said jaws, said screw having an intermediate graduated ring fixed thereon between said handles, and an index pointer on one of said handles adjacent and overlying said ring and located at right angles thereto to indicate on said ring the exactadjustmeht of said stop screw.
