ing points for various kinds of work, and to furnish a. caliper of the plier type with an adjustable tension device for holding the jaws of the caliper closed on a piece of work.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a caliper having opposed handles with one of the handles constituting a support for an indicator or gauge, and the other handle serving as an actuating medium for the indicator, and to accomplish this and other results by a strong, durable and inexpensive device.
My invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the caliper;
Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and
Fig. 3 is an end view.
In the drawing, the reference numerals 1 and 2 denote plier shaped handles having substantially parallel spaced apart hand grip portions that may be knurled or otherwise roughened so that a firm hand grip may be had for manipulating the caliper. One end of the handle 1 has an apertured ear 8 loosely fitting between a set of apertured ears t of the-handle 2 and all of said ears are pivotally connected together by a rivet or pin 5. The apertured ears 3 and i are formed with arcuated jaw members 6 and 7 having the outer ends thereof apertured, as at 8 for countersunk screws 9 employed for holding jaw blocks 10 and 11 in opposing relation on the jaw members 6 and 7 respectively. The jaw block 11 provides a. point contact 12 for apiece of work and the jaw block 11 has two or more contacts 13 for a piece of work, thus providing a three or more point contact between the jaw members 6 and 7 for a piece of work placed in the caliper. The jaw blocks 10 and 11 are interchangeable and blocks of various sizes and configurations may be used in accordance with a piece of work to be measured.
The jaw member 7 is provided with a work stop li carried by a slotted plate 15 adjustably secured to one side of the jaw member 7 by a screw 1601 other holding means. This work stop may be positioned to correctly define the location of a piece of work between the jaw members 6 and 7, so that the jaw blocks 10 and 11 may 'properly engage the piece of work.
Attached to the. inner wall of the handle 2, adjacent the apertured ears at is a tension device in the form of a fiat spring 17 made in two parts with the parts adjustably connected' together by a nut equipped screw 18. The parts of the spring may be adjusted to increase or decrease the over-all longitudinal dimension of the tension device and one end of the spring is attached to the handle 2, as at 19, while the opposite end of the spring is curved, as at 20, to bear against the handle 1 and hold the handles 1 and 2 spread apart with the jaw blocks 10 and 11 closed on a piece of work.
The caliper handle 2 has a flat extension 21 provided with a slot 22 and extending through said slot is the L-shaped extension 23 of the caliper handle 1. By this arrangement the extensions 21 and 23 have the extremities thereof in proximity 'to each other and approximately parallel.
On the flat extension 21 is a lug 24; and at tached thereto by a set screw 25 is a clamping member 26 supporting the stem 27 of a gauge 28, said gauge being preferably an indicator adapted to be actuated by a pin 29. The pin extends behind the flat extension 21 into engagement with the extension 23 and said extension is also engaged by an adjustable stop 30 carried by the fiat extension 21 and adapted to be set and held by a jam nut 31. The stop 30 constitutes means for preventing an excessive action of the extension 23 against the indicator pin 29, thus avoiding possible injury to the indicator when not in use. 3
Since interchangeable jaw blocks are used in connection with the caliper, it may become necessary to adjust the spring 17, the position of the indicator 28, and the stop 30. All of these adjustments are easily performed and the caliper can be readily manipulated in one hand to ascertain a desired exterior dimension. It is apparent that the caliper can be manipulated somewhat similar to a pair of pliers and when placed in engagement with a piece of work the gauge and of less height than the length of the extension 28, there "is clearance above the gauge for an arm gripping thecalipers. In other Words the gauge is ina convenient location that Will not interfere with manipulation of the calipers in the usual manner.
It is thought that the utility of my inven- 7 tion will be apparent Without further; de-
scription, and While in the'drawing there is illustrated, a preferred embodiment of my caliper, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
WVhat I claimis p l. A caliper comprising pivotally connected handles, a comparatively flat twopart spring between said handles'holding said handles normallyseparated, said spring having its parts connected together so that said spring may be adjusted in its longitudinal dimension, jaw members carried by said handles, interchangeable jaw blocks attached to said jaw members, and a gauge supported from one of said handles and actuated by the other handle. I
2. A caliper having handles With one of said handles having a flat extension, and the other handle an L shaped extension extending through said flat extension so that the extremities of said extensions are in proximity to each other, an adjustable gauge supported from said flat extension and adapted to be actuated by said L extension, and interchangeable jaw blocks supported from said handles.
3 A caliper comprising handles having substantially parallel spaced apart hand grip portions, jaws carried by said handles adaptedfor engagement With a piece of Work, a dial type indicator adjustably supported from one of said handles and having its dial axis substantially at a right angle to the hand grip portions of said handles, and
7 adapted to be actuated by the other handle,
and means under said indicator and on the enonen s. WETTRIGHQ
