1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in tools and more particularly to p 1ers.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a pair of pliers having jaws on the corresponding handle members.
Another important object of the invention is to provide pliers having jaws which can be angularly set with respect to the handles on which they are carried.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational View of the pliers.
Figure 2 is a side elevational View of the pliers in opened position.
Figure 3 is a top plan View of the pliers.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a cross section on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that 4the pliers include a pair of handles 5, 5, each having a jaw 6, these jaws being pivotally connected with the handles 5.
As can be seen, a pin 1 is disposed through the intermediate portions of the jaws 6 and also through the adjacent ends of the handles 5, 5. Thus the jaws are swingably or pivotally secured to the handles and the four parts are connected together in a, unitary but swingable relationship.
Each of the slides I0 has a laterally disposed foot I3 disposed through a not s4 in the butt end' of the corresponding handle 5, and a hook member l5 swingably mounted on the outer side of each handle 5 is adapted to engage the corresponding foot I3 to hold the slide ID in the position shown in Figure 2, retaining the toothed end portion 9 engaged with a, predetermined tooth 8 of the complementary jaw 6.
Thus, it can be seen, that by retracting the slides I0, the desired angularity of the jaw 6 with respect to the handles 5 can be attained; after which the slides can be returned to engage the teeth 8 and the hooks I5 engage with the foot portions I3 so that the jaws cannot selfadjust themselves.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as lclaimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A tool of the character described comprising a pair of handles, a pair of jaws, a pivot pin disposed through adjacent ends of the handles and through intermediate portions of the jaws, and detent means on the handles for engagement with the jaws to hold the jaws in definite position with respect to the handles, said means consisting in the provision of teeth on the inner ends of the jaws, and adjustable toothed elements on the handles for engagement with the teeth of the jaws, said toothed members being slidably disposed on the handles, and retaining means for the toothed members, said retaining means each consisting of a slot in the corresponding handle, a foot on the corresponding toothed member disposed through the slot and a hooked member on the complementary handle for engagement with the foot.
