CUSPIDOR-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1916.
Application led May 5, 1916. Serial No. 95,648.
To @ZZ whom t 'may concern.' y Be it known that we, MA'r'rHIAs RIVAL and JOHN lVUTHRIo-I, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Cleaners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in cuspidor cleaners, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed that water can be introduced into the cuspidors for thoroughly cleaning or flushing the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cuspidor cleaner so constructed that the same can be used for carrying the cuspidor from place to place.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cleaner of this character having slidably mounted thereon a cover for engaging the upper end of the cuspidor to close the same when the water is introduced into the cuspidor so as to prevent splashing.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional View. F ig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3*?) of Fig. l. Fig. t is a similar view on line of Fig. 1.
The device comprises a tube 1, said tube having connected to its upper end a coupling 2 which has connected thereto a hose 3, whereby water can be introduced into thc tube 1 from a suitable supply. Engaged in the lower end of the tube 1 is-a nozzle 4;, said nozzle being preferably of that type having a plurality of perforations 5 formed therein so that the water will be directed in contact with the sides and bottom ofthe cuspidor. Clamped around the tube 1 is a pair of plates 6, said plates having pivotally engaged therebetween the lower ends of the arms 7, which terminate in curved bars S,
said bars having their ends provided with horizontally disposed arcuate jaws 9 which are adapted to clamp the neck of the cuspidor so as to hold the nozzle i in propzfz; position for directing the water against the interior wall of the cuspidor. For holding the jaws 9 in clamped engagement with the neck of the cuspidor, coiled springs 10 are provided, said springs having their outer ends connected to the bars 8 and their inner ends to the tube 1. Slidable on the tube l is a circular cover 11 which has secured thereto the lower end of a rod 12, said rod serving to raise or lower the cover when desired. The cover when engaged with the upper end of the cuspidor will prevent splashing' and overflowing of the water. A handle 13 is secured to the coupling 2 so that the tube 1 can be conveniently held or lifted, as desired. In use the arms 7 are forced toward each other so as to spread the jaws 9 whereby the nozzle 4 can be engaged in the cuspidor, said springs 10 serving to hold the jaws in clamped engagement with the neck of the cuspidor after the arms 7 have been released. The cover 11 is then moved downwardly so as to cover the cuspidor and the water turned on so that it will enter the cuspidor. When the jaws 9 are engaged with the cuspidor it is obvious that when the tube 1 is lifted the cuspidor will also be lifted so that it can be carried from place to place.
Vhat is claimed is A cuspidor cleaner comprising a tube, means for conducting water to the tube, a nozzle carried by the lower end of the tube,
arms pivotally associated with the tube and having bars formed upon their lower ends, said bars having jaws carried thereby for engaging the neck of a cuspidor, springs connecting the tube and bars for yieldably holding the jaws engaged with the neck of the cuspidor, and a cover slidably mounted upon the tube, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, we'afiiX our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
MATTHIAS RIVAL. JOHN IVUTHRICH. `Witnesses:
PHILIP BARDEOK, JOHN F. EPILER.
