JOHN JOKISCH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
@FFICE. i
BRUSH ESPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR CLEANING STOVEPIPES.
Application filed November 20, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN JoKIsoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of l/Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes Especially Adapted for Cleaning Stovepipes, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to an improved brush primarily devised for removing the soot from stove pipes.
The object of the invention is to produce a brush of this kind which shall be of a collapsible nature whereby the same may be readily inserted in the sections of a stove pipe and thereafter brought to operative position to contact with the interior of the pipe and remove the soot therefrom.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a collapsible brush constructed in accordance with this invention, parts being in section.
Fig. 2 is a face view thereof.
The improved brush is broadly indicated by the numeral 13, the same including a handle 14: which is constructed of any desired number of sections each hingedly connected as at 15. One of the sections, adjacent the hinge thereof has arranged thereon a slidable bolt 16. The adjacent section is provided with a keeper 17. The hinges are so connected and the bolt is so arranged that the handle sections may be folded against each other when not in alinement so that the brush 13, when not in use will constitute only a comparatively small article which may be readily stored. The bolt and keepers are therefore arranged in suitable depressions in the respective sections of the handle. To the outer section of the handle 14 is hingedly connected, as at 18 the inner straight ends of two approximately semicylindrical plates 19. These plates have their rounded outer surfaces provided with bristles 20 which form the brush proper, the plates providing the heads of the brushes. The plates upon their outer surfaces are formed with depressions 21, so that when the same are folded together the end of the handle will be received in the said depressions and the faces of the plates may be brought into contact with each other. plates, upon their outer surfaces have secured thereto each a flexible element 22, the said elements passing through a suitable opening 23 in the outer section of the handle and through one of a pair of lateral extensions 241' on the said handle. The flexible elements are brought together and are guided through suitable eyes 25 in the said outer section of the handle. It will be apparent that a pull upon the connected flexible elements will cause the plates to be swung outwardly of the handle upon their hinges and be brought together so that the brush in this manner is folded to permit of the ready insertion thereof through the opening in the knee or elbow. The lateral extensions provide a support for the plates 19 when the same are in their spread posi- I tion and the brush isin operative position. Secured to the outer section of the handle is an angularly arranged cutter member 26 7 that may be brought to contact with the inner surface of the stove pipe 1 to dislodge any crustation therefrom which can not be removed by the brush.
To hold the brush in its open position, I secure to the inner faces of theplates 19 flexible elements 27. These elements are guided through suitable angle openings 28 in a plate or bar 29 secured to the outer section of the handle and also through an eye 30 on the said outer section of the hancent sections for retaining said sections in alinement, a brush comprising two semicylindrical plates having their straight edges hingedly connected to the outer section of the handle and their outer peripheries provided with bristles, means on said outer handle section for supporting the brush plates when the latter are in alinenient, an angularly disposed cutter member on said outer section of the brush, flexible means connected with the plate, guide means therefor, one of said flexible means designed, when a pull is exerted thereon to swing and retain the brush sections in operative p0sition and the other of said flexible elements designed when a pull is exerted thereon to swing said sections toward each other and 10 collapse the brush.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JOHN JOKISCH.
