UNITED STATES PATENT or ice.
RICHARD It. snooicor BRDOKLYN, new YORK.
ADJUSTABLE BROOM.
Application filed February 28, 1925. Serial No.. 12,400.
Be it known that I, RroHAnn R. BROOK, a citizenof the United States of America, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Broom, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription.
This invention relates to brooms and has particular reference to an improvement in push brooms.
One of the outstanding objects of the present invention is to provide a push broom in which the head supporting the bristles is adjustable for the purpose of increasing or de creasing the effective width of the broom in accordance with the use or capacity in which it is to be employed. v
More specifically the invention comprehends an adjustable push broom consisting of hingedly connected sections, certain of which sections are removable to an out-ofthe-way position when it is desired to decrease the width of the broom and conversely movable to an effective position when it is desired to increase the width of the broom together with a common means for respectively holding said sections in either position.
The invention furthermore comprehends an adjustable push broom of the character set forth which is comparatively simple in its construction and mode of use, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eflicient in its purpose.
WVith the above recited and other objects in view, reference is had to the following specification and drawings in which there is exhibited one example or embodiment of the invention which is in no way intended as a limitation upon the scope of the appended claims as it is tobe clearly understood that variations and modifications which properly fall within the scope of said claims may be resorted to when found expedient.
In the drawings- Figure 1 is a plan View of a broom constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating the same adjusted to its maximum width.
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof illustrating in broken lines one of the hinged sections adjusted to an out-of-the-way position for decreasing the width of the head.
Fig. 8 is a side view.
Referring to the drawings by characters 1,
of reference 10 designates the main head section supporting the bristles 11 which are anchored therein and 12 the respective aux" iliary movable head sections supporting the bristles 13, the said sections 12 being connected by hinges 13 to the opposite ends of the main section 10 whereby said auxiliary sections may be swung from an auxiliary alined relation to the main section 10, to a superimposed relation as illustrated in broken lines in Fig. 2. In order to provide means for holding the sections 12 in horizontal alinement with the section 10 or in superposed relation in an out-of-the-way position, hooks 14. are pivoted to the front and rear sides of the opposite ends of the main section 10 for engagement respectively with the keeper pins 15 on the front and rear edges of the auxiliary sections 12 adjacent their hinged ends. Under this arrangement it is obvious that the hooks operatively coact with the keeper pins 15 in either of the two positions of the auxiliary sections 12 so that said sections are retained against accidental movement. The main section 10 is provided with the angularly disposed openings 16 at the center thereof within which the handle- 17 is selectively engaged. The auxiliary hinged sections 12 are of a length whereby when they are swung to an out-of-the-way position, they do not cover the openings 16 or interfere with the handle 17.
I claim:
1. An adjustable push broom comprising a central head section, auxiliary head sections connected. to the opposite ends thereof for adjustment to a position extending from the ends and to a position disposed within the confines of said center section and a common means for retaining said auxiliary sections in either of said positions.
2. An adjustable push broom comprising a bristle supporting head including a central section to which a handle is attached and a pair of auxiliary sections hingedly connected to the opposite ends thereof for arrangement in prolongation of the center section and in a superposed out-of-the-way position whereby to increase or decrease the width of the broom and a common means for retaining said auxiliary sections in their adjusted pair of auxiliarysections hingedly connected to the opposite ends thereof for engagement in prolongation of the center section and in a superposed out-of-the-Way position Whereby to increase or decrease the Width of the broom and a common means for retaining said auxiliary sections in their adjusted positions, said means comprising hooks carried by the central section and keeper pins carr-ied by the auxiliary sections adapted to be engaged by said hooks.
4. A push broom comprising a handle and a bristle supporting head including a main central section attached to the handle and a pair of-side sections having hinged connection to the opposite ends of the main central section for sivinging movement from a position in prolongation thereto to a super posed out-of-the-Way position or vice versa whereby to decrease or increase the Width of the broom and means for retaining said movable sections in their adjusted positions.
