Description

Oct. 1' 7, 1939. L. KRUGER EIAL COMB Filed Aug. 8, 19 3 Patented Oct. 17, 1939 COMB Louis Kruger and Samuel Witte, New York, N. Y.
Application August 8, 1938, Serial No. 223,665
6 Claims. (01. 13211) The object of the invention is to produce a comb, the teeth of which may be readily separated one from the other, so as to permit the through washing or cleaning between the teeth .and thereby assure the sanitation of the comb at all times. The comb is to have substantially the same appearance and composition materials of ordinary combs, though not the same or similar design or construction, and yet be simple and loginexpensive to manufacture.
In prior inventions'and the former state of the art, removable teeth'were thought and claimed to be the solution of the problem of keeping combs clean. Our invention solves the problem in an entirely different and yet more practical way as can be seen from the more particular description hereinafter stated containing the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, to wit: Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the comb open, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the comb closed, Fig, 3 is a transverse section view looking toward the center of the comb, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view looking toward the end of the comb, Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the under partof the comb looking toward the toothpoints. Fig. 6 is a view of a locking device attached to the end of the comb.
Referring to the drawing, the comb actually consists of three combs in one, 2, 6 and 1, containing the teeth respectively and severally designated I, la and lb, though the same principle may be applied to 2 or 4 or even more similar parallel and joined sections. The teeth of each parallel section of the comb are widely, though evenly spaced as indicated by I, la and lb on Figs. 1 and 2, yet when all the sections are joined,
the teeth become close together, forming a comb of ordinary appearance and size (Fig. 2).,
On each of the outside sections, 2 and 6, the teeth I and lb are uniformly nd equally spaced apart. Between each two teeth on these outer sections are two notches or indentations which are adjacent to each other and on the same side, indicated by 9 on Fig. 5. The middle or third section, 1, likewise has the teeth uniformly and equally spaced apart, la, and likewise has two notches between each pair of the teeth, but one notch appears on one side and the other notch on the opposite side, as indicated by 8 on Fig. 5. In the present instance the notches are curved but they may have other shapes and forms without in any way altering the principle of the invention. When the three sections are brought together, the notches fit into their respective grooves and dovetail, forming a continuous line of evenly spaced teeth as in the usual coarse or fine comb.
The three sections are connected by a hinge 3 and held in place by a locking device 4 and 5, which may be opened and closed at will. When the comb is opened, it is but a simple matter to wash or wipe the interstices or spaces between the teeth and then to close and lock the comb again.
While we have shown and described the preferred form of our invention, we are aware that the construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and essence of the invention as indicated by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A comb comprising a middle section, and sections on opposite sides of said middle section, and co-extensive therewith, each section having a body portion, and spaced teeth extending from the body portion, the bodies of said sections being hinged together, the bodies of the outside sections contacting the opposite surfaces of the body of the middle section, the teeth of all said sections being in alignment, and the teeth of each section being disposed between the teeth of the other two sections, the teeth of each outer section being connected to the body thereof by inclined portions offset inwardly toward the plane of the middle section, and the body of the middle section having portions contacting the inclined offset portions of the other two sections.
2. A comb comprising a middle section, and sections on opposite sides of said middle section, and co-extensive therewith, each section having a body portion, and spaced teeth extending from the body portion, the bodies of said sections being hinged together, the bodies of the outside sections contacting the opposite surfaces of the body of the middle section, the teeth of all said sections being in alignment, and the teeth of each section being disposed between the teeth of the other two sections, the teeth of each outer sec tion being connected to the body thereof by inclined portions offset inwardly toward the plane of the middle section, and the body of the middle section having portions contacting the inclined offset portions of the other two sections, and means for locking said sections against relative movement.
3. A comb comprising a plurality of sections hinged together and including a middle section, and sections on opposite sides of said middle section, and co-extensive therewith, the teeth of the outer sections being in the plane of the middle section and in alignment with the teeth of the middle section, the teeth of each section being disposed between teeth of the other sec-- tions, and the middle section being formed between each adjacent pair of teeth of said section, with a notch on each'side, one to receive a portion of the tooth of one of the outside sections, and the other to receive the portion of a tooth of the other outside section.
4. A comb comprising a plurality of sections hinged together and including a middle section, and sections on opposite sides of said middle section, and co-extensive therewith, the teeth of the outer sections being in the plane of the middle section and in alignment with the teeth of the middle section, the teeth of each section being disposed between teeth of the other sections, and the middle section being formed between each adjacent pair of teeth of said section, with a notch on each side, one to receive a portion of the tooth of one of the outside sections, and the other to receive the portion of a tooth of the other outside section, and'the outer sectionseach being formed on the inner surface thereof with a pair of notches between each pair of adjacent teeth on said section, one to receive a tooth of the middle section, and the other to receive a tooth of the other outside section.
5. A comb comprising a middle section, and' sections on opposite sides of said middle section, and co-extensive therewith, each section having a body and spaced teeth, the bodies of the and co-extensive therewith, each section having a body and spaced teeth, the bodies of the outside sections contacting opposite surfaces of the body of the middle interposed section, the teeth of,
each section being disposed between teeth of the other two sections, all ofsaid teeth being in alignment, the teeth of each outer section being connected to the body thereof by a portion offset inwardly toward the plane of the middle section, and the body of the middle section having inclined notches on opposite sides thereof to receive the offset portions of the outer sections, and the. outer sections each being formed on the inner surface thereof with a pair of notches between each pair of adjacent teeth on said section, one to receive a tooth of the middle section, and the other to receive a tooth of the other outside section.
