HUGH A BAILEY AND GLENN M. BAILEY, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
TOOTH-BRUSH CASE.
Application filed December 1, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, HUGH A. BAILEY and GLENN M. BAILEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brush Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sanitary casing for the brush head of tooth brushes whereby to protect the bristles thereof, when the brush is not in use and also to effectively incase the bristles against the entrance of dust or dirt thereto.
The primary object of the invention is to produce a protective casing for this purpose, which shall be of an extremely simple construction, easily applied to or removed from the brush head and efiectively attached to the brush head to fully conceal all of the bristles thereof when positioned thereon.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating the application of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the improvement.
Fi 3 is a detail sectional view approximate y on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the casing removed, and the back plate or closure therefor being in its open position.
The numeral 1 designates any ordinary construction of tooth brushes, 2 the head therefor, and 3 the bristles connected with the head.
Our improved sanitary casing may be constructed of any desired material, such as celluloid or the like. The casing is indicated by the numeral 4% and comprises a member shaped to correspond with the shape of the head and bristles of the brush. The casing has its outer end rounded and both its top and inner end open. The top is provided with a continuous inturned flange 5 and the open end has hinged to the bottom thereof, as at 6, a closure plate 7 The top of the casing terminates preferably a suitable distance from what we have termed the outer or open end of the casing, and the said top, may, if desired, be provided with a continuous groove 8 whereby to receive the edges of the brush head, the upper edges of the side walls 9 of the eas- Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 204,890.
ing, outward of the said groove 8 being disposed to contact with the under face of the brush head, and the casing from the groove to the bottom wall 10 thereof being of a depth to snugly receive the bristles of the brush. The casing is, of course, of a, length to fully receive the brush head and bristles, and the closure plate 7 preferably has its side edges turned upon itself and through these turned portions is passed a wire 11, the said wire providing the hinged connection 6 between the bottom' plate or wall 10 of the casing and the closure 7 The rounded edges, indicated, for distinction, by the numerals 12, are designed to frictionally contact with the sides 9 of the casin and to assist in holding the closure plate in its closed position, and, if desired, the wire members 11 may be extended a suitable distance beyond the outer edge of the closure plate and bent or rounded upon themselves to provide spring hooks 13 that are designed to be received in suitable depressions 14 in the sides of the brush head.
By swinging the closure plate to its open position, the casing 4 may be readily slid over the brush head to receive the bristles of the brush, and by swinging the closure plate 7 to its closed position, the same frictionally engaging with the sides of the casing, the springhook members or catches 13 engaging with the sides of the head or with the sides of the handle, or being received in the referred to depressions 14 will effectively lock the plate 7 in its closed position. It will be obvious that by swinging the plate to its open position, the casing may be removed from the brush head, and from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings, the simplicity and advantages of the construction will. it is. thought, be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:
1. A protective casing for the brush heads of tooth brushes comprising a member having an open top and one of its ends open, said top having an inturned flange, a plate hingedly secured to the lower wall at the open end of the casing, and flanges on the edges of the plate designed to frictionally engage with the sides of the casing to hold the plate closed on the casing.
2. In a sanitary casing, for the brush heads of tooth brushes, a member having an outer rounded end, an inner open end and an open top, said top terminating inward from the open end of the casing and having its edges provided with a continuous" flange, a plate for the open endof the casing having its edges rolled, a wire member passing through the said rolled portions and hingedly connected to the bottom of the casing, and the said rolled edges designed to frictionally contact'with the sides of the casing When the plate is swung to closing position thereon.
3. In combination with a tooth brush having depressions on the sides of its head, of
- a protective casing for the head of the said brush including a member having one of its ends open and having an open top, said top having an inturned continuous flange, the sides of the top below the said flange having a continuous groove, the groove portion of the sides terminating inward of the open end of the casing, a closure plate for the open end hinged to the bottom of the casing and having its sides flanged to friotionally engage with the sides of the casing, and spring hooks projecting from the sides of the said plate and designed to engage in the referred to notches in the brush head.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
HUGH A. BAILEY. GLENN M. BAILEY.
