HENRY G. MCCIIOSKEY, OF GALENA, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,906,dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed December 5, 1898. Serial No. 698,324. (No niodcl 'To all whom t may concern.v
Be it known that I, HENRY G. MoCLosKEY, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases or Covers for Heads of Tooth-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in cases or covers for heads ot' tooth-brushes, the object being to provide a simple, cheap,'and attractive case for covering` and protecting the heads of toothbrushes when not in use.
A further Objectis to provide a case or cover having a dust-prooflid or door for preventing the ingress of dust or other foreign matter to the brush-head.
A further object is to provide for the accommodation of brush-heads of varying sizes and at the same time guard against a rattling of the parts, whether the head be large or small.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of` construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a view of my improvement in its operative position on a tooth-brush; and Fig. 2 is a detached view of the same, the lid or door thereof being shown in its open or elevated position.
Arepresents an elongated case or cover provided with rounded ends when in its closed position; and it consists of a U-shaped body portion l, formed of a single piece of suitable material and open at one end, a top plate or section 2, secured to said body portion, and a bottom plate or section 3, also secured to the body portion l, the free end of said plate 3 extending a short distance beyond the open end of said body portion 1. To the plate 2 is hinged a door or lid 4, through the medium of which the open end of said case or cover is closed. This hinged section is provided at its lower inner ends with depending lugs 5 5, which latter when the lid or door is closed are adapted to springinto the notches 6 6, formed in the sides of section orplate 3, whereby said lid or door is locked in its closed position and held against accidental displacement. The frontlower portion of lid or door 4 is cnt away, as at 7, so as to form an opening for the accommodation of the neck of the tooth-brush handle.
The ingress of dust or other foreign matter is prevented by the employment of felt or other yielding material, which is placed on the interior wall of door or lid 4, as shown at S, and on the projecting portion of plate 3, as at 9. When the brush-head is within the case, this felt or other yielding material firmly presses the neck of the brush, as well as against the adjacent bristles, and by friction al contact prevents any movement on the part' of the latter within the case or cover or any movement of the case or cover on the head, thus avoiding rattling of the parts. This felt will also prevent the clothes from being soiled or the contents of a pocket from being dampened should the brush be placed within the case in a wet condition.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that my improved case or cover is a decided improvement over all others wherein the case constitutes a part of the brush-handle orone in which a specially-consti*ucted brush head or handle is required. Vith my device when the brush is unfitfor further use it may be discarded and a new brush used in the same case or cover, while with the old forms it is lnecessary to discard the entire device when they are combined in one structure.
To insert the brush-head of a tooth-brush within case A, the lid or door thereof is swung open, after which said brush-head is slid into 'the case or cover and the lid or door closed, and when the lattter reaches its normal position the depending lugs 5 5 spring Within and engage the notches 6 6, thus holding said door or lid against accidental movement. The brush is easilyand quickly introduced by simply pulling in an outward direction on handle lO, which operation causes lugs 5 5 to spring out of notches 6 6, thus releasing the lid or cover and allowing the same to open and permitting of the withdrawal of the brush-head.
The case or cover can be made of any suitable material; butin practice I prefer to construct it of some light metal-such as gold, silver, alu minium, tin, and the like-and when IOO so constructed may be ornamented in any desired manner.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As a new article of manufacture, a case or cover to receive and completely inclose the head of any ordinary tooth-brush, said case having a swinginglid to inclose the inner ends ofl the bristles of the brush and engage the handle of the latter. l
2. A coverfor a brush-head consisting of a casing made in two sections hinged together and adapted to inclose the brush-head, and a latch connecting the parts of said cover.
3. A cover for a brush comprising a case for the reception of a brush-head and having notches in its base, and a swinging lid for the case provided with lugs to enter the notches in the case and lock said lid in its closed position.
head of a brush, a lid or door hinged to saidcase or cover, said lid being cut away to accommodate the neck of a brush and provided on its inner face with yielding material, substantially as set forth.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a case or cover provided with a projecting end7 said case or cover adapted to receive the head of a brush, a lid or door adapted to close down on said projecting end, said lid or door being provided with a cut-away portion to embrace the neck of a brush and yielding material disposed within the interior of said lid or cover and over the upper face of said projecting end,
substantially as set forth.
'7. A cover fora tooth-brush consisting of a casing open at one end, and having its base projecting beyond said open end, a lidfor the casing hinged thereto over the projecting end of the base and adapted to engage the latter and packing material'on the projecting end of the base and within the coversubstantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HENRY G'. MCCLOSKEY.
