I W. MEAKER, OF DETROTT, MlGHlGrAN.
. SALT-SHAKER.
Application filed April whom it may concern:
known that I, Joiix W. Meixner, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of YVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Salt- Shakers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in salt shakers and the obj ect of the invention is to provide a device for holding and discharging salt or other seasoning in sma uantities and in such a manner that the user has complete control overthe flow, and further to provide 'a very cheap, convenient and compact construct-ion in which the seasoning is eectually protected against contamination from dust, odors, or moisture in the atmosphere and thus kept clean and dry. lt is also an object of the invention to provide a construction especially adapted to e metal and which may easily be taken apart for cleaning, and further to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction and arrangement o" parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, reference being had to the accoinpanying drawings, in which',
Figure 1, is a transverse vertical section of a device embodying the invention; Fig. 2, a section of the same on the line fm; Fig. 3, a view sii ilar to Fig. 1, showing a modified construction; Fig. Ll, a sectiona view of the parts of Fig. 3 separated; Fie'. 5, -a transverse vertical section of another modified construction; Fig. G, is a similar view of a further modification.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is an inclosing casing closed at its top and sides and o en at the lower end, and 2 is a cylindrical receptacle screw-threaded at its upper end to engade a vdome-shaped cap 3 which is provide with several rows of perforations l and has formed integral with it at its axis, an upwardly and inwardly extending neck portion 5 having a flat head or flange upper end 6 to seat upon the inner surface of .the upper end of the casing. The neck has a screw-threaded axial bore and opposite this bore in the axis of the casing is an openin through which a serew-plug or stopper 7 `is inserted and screwed into the bore. r flange or shoulder 8 on the plug engages t e outer surface of the casing to clamp the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 1909.
Serial No. 366,649.
saine between it and the neck portion to firmly hold the cap and attached i'eceptacle lugs 9 extending inwardly from the casing being l the receptacle and to guide the saine in inthe casing. The receptac e when in place extends lower edge of the casing and forms the bottlie device is supported, a discharge opening ei between the casing and receptacle for the discharged through the perforations of the cap when the device is shaken. The recepaiid the device may be easily taken apart for king out the screw-plug which holds the cap The construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4;, exception that the casing is extended below the receptacle and broadened out to forni a receptacle is hdd in engagement with the cap by it'rictional contact therewith instead Fig. shows a construction in which the outer casingT 12 is formed of glass and Open at both ends,
a glass screw-cap 13. These parts of metal. The
dome-cap for the with a head portion 1st of a diameter to fit by a in place,
provided to assist ni centering serting it in downward below the toni or base upon which 1() being l ft escape of the salt or other material which is tacle is filled by unscrewing it from the cap cleaning by ta in place. is the same as that shown i Fig. 1 with the base ll upon which the device stands and the of a screw-threaded engagement.
the upper end being closed by may if desired salt receptacle is formed within the casing connected to the cap neck portion 15 forming a deflecting sur ace. On the upper edge of the head is an outwardly extending flange 16 adapted to be clamped between the upper end of the casing and its screw-cap to hold the receptacle in place. The receptacle is held frictionally by the dome-cap with its lower end above the plane of the bottom of the casing so that the casing i'ests upon the table when the shaker is not in use.
Fig. 6 shows a shaker formed of sheet nietal with an outer casing 17 open at both ends, the upper end being screw-threaded and closed by a tight covei' 1S to which the curved neck portion 19 of the doine-cap o` the salt receptac permanently secured in position to hold the receptacle centered in the casing.
Having thus fully described my invention what l claim is zd 1. "he combination of a casing, a receple is soldered or otherwise lOO tacle in the casing` and a cap for the re- 5. The combination of a casing having an sideV of the axial opening in its upper end and open at its lower end, a perforated cap having a neck g inner side of the end of the easing and having a screw-threaded axial opening, a .screw-plug engaging said having awprojecting flange to engage the outer surface ofthe casing, and a receptacle engaging the cap.
he combination of a receptacle having` discharge openings near its upper end, and
ceptacle attached to the inner closed upper end of the Casing.
he combination of a casing, a receptacle in the casing, a dome-shaped perforated cap for the receptacle within the casing, and means for detachably securing the said cap to the upper end of the casing.
3. The combination of a casing closed at its upper end, a receptacle in the casing, a dome-shaped perforated cap for the receptacle, a neck portion attached to the cap at a casing hai/'ing' a closed upper end attached its axis and haring an upwardly and outto the receptacle with a space between its side wall and the side of the receptacle and with its lower open end at a distance above the horizontal plane of the lower end of the receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature u1 presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. MEAKER.
wardly curved defiecting surface opposite the perforations in the capn and means engaging the neck portion to secure the cap to the casing.
4. The combination of a casing Closed at its upper end and open at its lower end, a perforated cap suspended within the casing from the closed upper end thereof at its axis, and a receptacle detaehably cap. A
fitnesses engaging said r MARY A. MEAKER, OTTO F. BARTHEL.
