CHARLES E. STOL'IZ, OF JAQUA, KA1\TSAS.
BROO1VI.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. STOLTZ, a eitizen of the United States, residing at Jaqua, in the county of Cheyenne and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in brooms, and has for its object to provide a broom-head receiving member which can be opened to remove the broom-head when worn out, the construc tion being such that a new broom-head can be readily inserted.
Another object is to provide a device of this general character, of a simple and in expensive nature, and of a compact and durable construction, including a broom holding member and a stafl capable of being conveniently and accurately assembled to provide a broom of the character described.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifieation, and in which like numerals of 'reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 shows a front view of a broom constructed according to my invention, with a part of the staff broken away. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of a broom holding device. Fig. 4 is a perspective cletail of the main or major half shell as used in my invention. Fig. 5 shows a perspective detail of the minor half shell. Fig. 6 is a perspective detail of the looking sleeve as used in my invention.
In my present invention I provide two similar shells, which are hingedly connected and are arranged to receive the head of a broom, the shells being clamped together by means of a sleeve and having means to receive an operating staff or handle.
The major member includes an aluminum sheet metal half shell 1, having the end 2, and the diverging sides 3, 3. Extending b from the end 2, is the tubular socket 4, hav- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept, 112, 1916 Application filed January 5, 1915.

ing a diameter approximately twice that of the depth of the shell, as will be understood in referring to Fig. 2. The tubular socket 4 has its lower portion cut away, as shown at 5, to facilitate the clamping of the minor section used in connection with this major section. As shown in F ig. 4 this tubular socket 4 is provided with the outstanding lug 6, and the openings 7, 7.
The lower end of the shell is provided with an inwardly directed edge flange c, as shown in Fig. 4, from which extend the teeth 8, adapted to embed themselves within the broom-straw head. As shown in Fig. 4, the sides 3 are provided with the inwardly directed shoulder forming portions 9, from which extend at right angles the flanges 10. Extending from each flange 10 is an L- shaped hook 11.
The minor sheet metal half shell, shown in F ig. 5, comprises the face 12, having the end 13, and the sides 14, a half tubular socket 15 extending from the end 13, this socket 15 being gradually attenuated and ending in the spurs 17, arranged to project through the openings 7, and be embedded within the staff 23, by means of which the broom is wielded.
The edges 00 of the sides 14 are adapted to be stopped against the shoulder forming portions 9 of the major shell, these sides 14 ending in the cars 16, arranged for coaction with the hoops 11. The major half shell is strengthened by means of the heads a and b, while the minor half shell section, shown in Fig. 5, is strengthened by means of the heads a and b. In connection with these two metal half shells, I employ a broom-head 24, made of such a size that the same will snugly fit into the two half shell sections. In securing the head 24 within the shells, the same is forced first into the major shell, in such a manner that the teeth 8 will be embedded within the side of the broomhead 24. The minor half shell is then connected by means of its cars 16 and the hooks 11, and forced inward, so that the tubular half socket 15 lies flat against the tubular socket 4, a staff 23 having previously been placed within the socket 4. The Spurs 17 are then driven into the handle 23 to prevent the same being withdrawn. After the member 15 has been forced against the socket 4, the tubular sleeve 20 is introduced over the staff 23, so that the lug 6 is engaged by the edge entering L-shaped bead 21,
stamped out of the sleeve 20, as shown in Fig. 6. This sleeve 20 forms a sort of bayonet lock with the lug, holding the half socket 15 against the socket 4, and insuring the broom staff also being held within the socket. When properly connected the broom-head 24 is securely held between the half shells. Then the broom-head is worn out and it is desired to replace the same, the sleeve 20 is removed, permitting the minor shell being carried outward, so that the broom-head can be detached from the major shell. The shells can be compactly folded while being shipped, while the broom-head can be removed or replaced with ease, accuracy and despatch.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A broom-head holder comprising a sheet metal half shell the sides of which sleeve having an edge entering L-shaped bead arranged to engage over said socket members and engage said lug, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A broom-head holder comprising a sheet metal half shell the sides .of which have inwardly directed shoulders from each of which extends a flange, a hook extending from each fiange, said half shell ending in a tubular handle socket having open ings and a lug, a second sheet metal half shell the sides of which end in ears arrangcd for co-action with said hooks said sides being adapted to rest against said shoulders, a tubular half socket extending from said last mentioned half shell and adapted to fit against said tubular socket, and a tubular sleeve having an edge entering L-shaped bead arranged to engage over said socket members and engage said lug, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A broom-head holder comprising a sheet metal half shell the sides of which have oppositely positioned divergingflangvs and ending in a tubular handle socket hav ing openings the edge of said half shell ha ving inwardly directed teeth, of hooks secured to the ends of said flanges a lug being formed on said handlesocket, a second sheet metal half shell the sides of which end in ears arranged for coaetion with said hooks and having a tubular half socket portion adapted to engage against said tubular socket, a broom-head clamped between said shells, and a tubular sleeve having an edge entering bead arranged to engage over said socket members and contain said lug, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
