Description

J. H. BECHLE.

APPLICATION man FEB. 25.1916.
@Hoff/nua Patented Oct. 17, 1916.
JOHN H. BECHLE, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO ALFRED H. SCHLOSSER AND ONE-THIRD TO AARON HOSSLER, BOTH OF OAIDTTON',` OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 1v, 191e.
Application filed February 25, 1916. Serial No. 80,386.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BEGHLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Billiard-Cue-Tip Fastener, of which thel following is a specification.
My invention relates to billiard-cue-tip fasteners, and has more especial reference to a fastener of this character which will securely and positively retain the tip-upon y the cue.
The object of this invention is to provide a billiard-cue-tip fastener which will securely retain the tip' upon the cue.
A further object is the provision of a billiard-cue-tip fastener which will retain the tip upon a billiard cue without the use of cement or other similar material.
A further object is to provide a billiardcue-tip fastener by the use of which the tip may be easily and readily removed from a billiard cue when desired and a new tip easily placed upon the cue.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the ap-gpended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view through a billiard-cuetip fastener constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same applied to a billiard cue. Fig'. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the tip clamping members. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tip used in this construction.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several iigures of the drawing.
Referring more especially to the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a billiard cue which is provided with the reduced neck portion 2 at its extremity. A ferrule 3, preferabl. formed of aluminum or similar material 1s internally bored at 4e for the purpose of attaching the same to the screw threaded portion 2 of the cue. The upper portlon ofthe ferrule 3v is provided with a frusto-conicalvsocket 5, which is adapted to receive the clamping members as will be hereinafter described.
Each of the clamping members 6 is halfround in cross secti'on and tapered suiiiciently to `allow thel two members to fit snugly within the socket 5 of the ferrule. Each of the clamping members is provided with an enlarged head 7 at its upper eX- tremi-ty, thus forming a shoulder 8, which 1s adapted to rest upon the top of the ferrule 3 as shown in Fig. 1. A socket 9 is formed in the upper portion of each of the clamping members 6, the half-round aperture 10 is formed in the upper end of each of said members and concentric with said` socket.
The tip which is used in connection with this construction is composed of leather or similar material andcomprises the ordinary tip portion 11 and the spaced disk r12, which is connected to the tip portion by means of a neck 13 preferably formed integral therewith.
In placing the tip in position upon the cue, the clamping members 6 arevplaced together, the disk 12 upon the tip being placed in the sockets 9 in said clamping members, the neck 13 upon the tip being received in the half round apertures 10 in said clamping members and the clamping members are then wedged into the tapered socket 5 in the ferrule as shown in Fig. 1. The clamping members are then thus held tightly in place within the socket of the ferrule, the tip being clamped within the sockets in said clamping members and retained firmly in position.
For the purpose of removing the tip from the cue in order to repair the same or place a new tip upon the cue, a cylindrical channel 14 is providedv through the ferrule at a point adjacent the lower extremity of the socket 5. By inserting a nail or other sharp instrument within said channel the clamping members may be pried upwardly sufliciently to loosen the same so that they may be removed and a new tip placed therein in the manner above described.
For the purpose of holding the ferrule 3 firmly upon the neck portion of the cue and at the same time providing means for easily removing the ferrule when desired, apu
15 is passed through the ferrule and the neck portion of the cue.
Although the drawings and above speciication disclose the best mode in which I have contemplated embodying my invention I desire to be not limited to the details of such disclosure, for, in the further practical application of my invention, many changes in form and construction may be made, as circumstances require or experience suggests, Without 'departing from the spirit of the invention, withinthe scope of the appendedv a transverse channel located near the lower extremity of said socket, a pair of halfround, tapered clamping members adapted to lit snugly Withinthe'tapered socket in saidl errule, each of said clamping members provided at its upper extremity With a socket and a half-round aperture communicating with said socket and a cue tip `comprising a tip portion, a neck portion adapted to be located through the halfround apertures in the clamping members and a disk portion carried at the lower eX- tremity of the neck portion and adapted to be located Within the sockets'formed in the clamping members.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
