To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GIUSEPPE PALLADINO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Billiard-Gue- Tip Holders, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the invention is to provide an attachment for billiard cues whereby the tip may be attached thereto quickly and without use of glue such as is now the comman practice. To this end, the invention embodies a sleeve attachable on the end of the cue 1, and is reduced in diameter and this sleeve receives a spring chuck or collet having appropriate jaws which engage the periphery of the tip and hold the same in place when the collet is inserted in the sleeve. By means of this construction the chuck or collet is caused to tighten its grip on the tip at the time of the latters impact with the ball, thereby more effectively holding the tip at the time that there is the greatest danger of its being knocked off.

The invention is describedand illustrated in a specific embodiment to which, however, it is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as the actual reduction to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claim.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the end of a one with the invention attached thereto.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the collet which holds the tip.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown the end of a cue 1, the extremity of which is reduced as indicated at 2 and at 3, the reduced portion 3 being of greater diameter, however, than the portion 2. This reduced portion 3 is designed to receive one end of the sleeve member 4: whose outer diameter is equal to the diameter of the main portion of the cue adjacent the reduced portion 3, so that the sleeve member lies flush with the body portion of the one 1. The end of the sleeve member sets against the shoulder formed at the junction at the reduced portion 3 with the body portion of the cue.

The outer or free end of the reduced portion 2 is conically formed as indicated at 5 and the tip of this conical portion 5 extends slightly beyond the end of the sleeve 4.

A collet or spring chuck 6 is designed for insertion in the sleeve 4: and this collet is provided with a plurality of jaw members formed by slitting the collet from one end to within specified distance of the other end, so that the jaw members may be sprung apart, the collet being formed on each jaw with an undercut lip 8 and with a seat 9. The under faces 10 of the seat portions of the jaws correspond in shape to the conical end 5 of the tip, so that they may rest thereupon when the collet is inserted on the sleeve 4, the seat portions at the center of the collet being cut away to provide a space int which the tip of the conical portion 5 may project.

The tip 11, in the use of the device, is adapted for attachment in the collet after the latter has been removed from the one by withdrawing it from the sleeve 41, this attaching of the tip being effected by springing the jaw 7 apart until the lips 8 may engage the beveled edge of the tip and the back of the tip rests upon seats 9. Thereafter the collet is inserted in sleeve 4 and as it is forced downward into the latter the jaws are pressed toward each other with the result that a firm grip is had upon the tip and finally when the bottom faces 10 of the collet jaws rests on the conical end 11 of the cue, further movement of the collet is precluded.

The upper or free edge of the sleeve 4: is beveled on the interior as indicated at 12 and this beveled portion engages the inclined portions 13 of the jaws when the collet is inserted in the sleeve member and it is designed that this engagement shall be effected just prior to the engagement between the bottom faces 10 with the conical portion 5. This construction provides for a still firmer engagement between the collet and the tip at the moment the tip is brought into impact with a ball, the bottom faces 10 ordinarily resting upon the conical end 5 firmly enough to preclude any further movement of the collet in the sleeve member. Therefore, when a ball is struck, these faces 10 are driven into firm contact with the conical end 5 with the result that the grip on the tip 11 is increased at that instant.

The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is;
